Well i finally went and seen the doc the other day for the anxiety i have been having. I have had a few panic attacks in the past not so bad and anxioty kind of ofter but a couple weeks ago i had one so bad i went to the ER. They found nothing really wrong with me and gave me some ativan for the day and sent me home and said to have a follow up with my regular doc. My first vistit she basically said i had anxiety after lookin at all the results from the ER and gave me zanex .25mg as needed up to 3 times a day. i tried that a couple days but it seemed like it made things worse. I called the pharmacy told them it seemed like i couldnt breath and they switched me to ativan. They gave me .5mg pills that said to take 1 to 2 every 4 to 6 hours and it seemed to work but only if i take 2 but when i called for a refil the actual doc said i took them too fast and now im afraid to take them for a small anxiety because i think she might not give me more. Anyone else have this situation? Im thinking about callin the counslor person have a meeting with them and see what they say.

Panic Attacks can be really scary..and yes I have ended up at the ER thinking I was heart attack...lo and behold - just like you - everything was fine :-) except my nerves of course.. eyes

The good news is..that it does go away - thank goodness...takes a lot of soul searching and hard work learning new skills to deal with the panic...but it can be done..I am living proof - trust me on this :-)

Hello and welcome!

I've been to the ER more times than I can count for things that were always diagnosed as anxiety. It's frustrating, but the right medication can make a difference for some people. You may want to talk with your doctor about the dosage or - if she doesn't support that - maybe switching to something else that's a little longer acting.

Good luck, and keep posting!

Hi Theone,

Welcome to Healing Well, I think that you have already found out that this is a very supportive forum. The people here are wonderful.

There are many different medications for anxiety and panic attacks and also ways that you can calm yourself down, such as deep breathing. You will get a lot of responses here and many suggestions. All of which will be of help to you.

Your doctor will probably find something that will work better and the counseling will help too. So I wish you the best of luck and hope that you find what works best for you.

Keep posting, and remember that we are here for you and always will try to help you the best that we can.

You have gotten some very good advice so far and I am sure that there will be more to come.

Have a wonderful day,
hugs, Karen

Hi Theone,

Welcome to Healing Well, this is a family that cares for all of our members and will give the best advice we can.  All advice given is from personal experiences, not medical advice.  There are many resources you can check out here on this site - to the right you can click on the Anxiety-Panic link in the yellow box and it will give you a list of resources to check out.  You can also check out previous posts as you will gain a wealth of information from them.  At the top of this page is an Anxiety-Panic Resources in link.  In that section (at the bottom) are two links that may be of use to you, one is CBT Therapy and the other is Relaxation Techniques.

Anxiety and panic can really play awful tricks on our bodies and make us feel worse than ever.  I am glad that you have had tests done to rule out medical problems and that you are working with your doctor on this issue.  Just keep working at it, it often times takes several changes in dosages and/or medications to find the right one(s) that will work for you.  Seeing a counselor is also a great idea, it sounds as though you need to talk through some issues and get to the bottom of what's causing the anxiety.  We wish you the best and please keep posting to let us know how you are doing.

Take care and welcome to Healing Well,
Wen

Hello and welcome! I too was on zanex for a while but I needed something stronger. I am now taking 100mg Zoloft. I started out on 50mg but it just didn't seem to be enough. I only take it once a day and it has helped a lot! My doc didn't want me on zanex anymore because it is addicting and not for everyday use, not for people like us who need something all day everyday. Talk to you doc about long term meds, not just quick fixes.

I thought zoloft was an anti depressant? or do the treat anxiety as well? Im going through alot right now breakup and now we got to do the parenting plan for our 1 year oldand we finally got one but she backed out the day before court. so now we gotta wait 2 weeks to go back and who knows what to expect then wa is aperantly a mom state and even tho i took care of my kid since she was born practically now i only get her 3 days a week. College and building a house for myself. I dont know if i should talk to the doc about increasing the dosage and have me keep taking that till the smoke clears or if i should get on something more long term. I guess an antidepressant wouldn't be so bad if it helps with anxiety because after all this i still do wanna be with her. I tried callin her today but in Indian so i do my medical at their clinic and it was National Indian day so they were closed. Hopefully i can get a walk in tomorrow since there already scheduled up to august!

Many
of the new antidepressants cover anxiety also but how each person repsonds to the med is different.  I would discuss the options with your PCP and get her opinion. Sometime just increasing the dose does the trick if there is room to move up.

I am so sorry you are going through the problems with your custody rights with your daughter.  I am sure that is a huge stressor for you and please know we are all here to support you.  Keep posting.

Take care and gentle hugs.

Hey thanks for the support everyone todays been kinda a downer day. For anyone takin medication for anxiety/panic do they help you catch your breath? the only reason im considering changing is because i constantly feel like i cant catch my breath. The meds help calm me down for the most part but all day today all i could think about was trying to keep a good breath and sometimes tense muscles in my backneck/shoulders.

HI theone
Check out up at the top in Yellow RESOURCES..with Wen's name at the end of it
It has links to breathing and relaxation as well as Cognitive behavioural Therapy / self help techniques there.....that may be of some help with your breathing problems
Also ativan is not a med that has a long life span in your system so it may be when it is coming out of your system you are experiencing this
I am not a doc
and you should ask your doc about this

As for the ativan you are taking the lowest dose there is of that so you may want to talk to your doc and explain why you took 2 of them and if it did help you ....
The doc had RX you as certain amount to be taken and so he/she is going by the amount of meds she/ he RX you and how long they should have lasted.....if you tell the truth you are much better off and the doc may up your dosage or change it to another med that is stronger...just a thought

Kitt is spot on about the Antidepressants they may help also with anxiety
Many ppl are on an AD and a fast acting med for anxiety / panic

Personally I only take my benzo's......

I am sure glad you found us here and hpe you will continue to post and get the support you need

Stay with us

Hi again!

I think a lot of the SSRI type antidepressants do work on anxiety also. Certainly my Paxil does, and it helps me a lot.

Shortness of breath can be a common symptom of anxiety, as can muscle tension. So long as you have a clean bill of health otherwise, there's nothing to worry about.

I believe it will. I have been taking atavan , same dosage as you for anxiety for about ??? years. I only take it when I get a really bad attack. I usually get them late at night so there isn't even anyone to talk to. When they happen during the day I can take a walk or call someone. Or distract myself with another activity till it passes. I only get them really bad about every two weeks. So I have actually stored up quite a few. Thank goodness because I recently saw a psych. who said I should not take it anymore because it was adictive. And it did show up in my blood work. Of course at that time I was having major problems and they gave me 100mg. zoloft. I was thinking of stopping it but realized I am not getting severe attacks since I started on zoloft. But what am I supposed to do if I have a severe attack go to ER again for them to give me the atavin. Thank goodness I stocked up. My pcp laughed and said your not addictid I would know by the amount of presc. you have asked for which isn't that many.

I was at this point of only taking one at bedtime to help me sleep on sleepless nights. So I asked my pcp to give me something to sleep. He prescribed temazapan 30mg. which is actually equivalant to .05mg of atavan and is the same type of drug. So it will also show up on my labs. I wish I could find a doctor who has had an anxiety attack at least once in his life. To experience a trip to the ER thinking your having a heartattack only to have them say it's not a heart attack it's ONLY anxiety. Take these atavan and you'll be fine. I can do that at home for less. You'r all right no one who has not experienced a severe attack has any idea what it's like . Zoloft does take time to get in your system so don't give up on it to quickly. But keep the atavan handy if you can get it. Recently I have notice they have gotten really strict about certain drugs. I Recently had foot surgery on my feet and the first time I went the dr. called in a pres. to the phar. When my husband went in to get it . I happened to be one I was allergic to so he had to go back. The pharmacy gave him a hard time about it They said they had to see me. So in my surgery wrapped up foot, in horrible pain I hobbled in with no crutches yet. And had a confrontation with the pharmacist who had to call the dr. for a different pres. I stood there on one foot for about 35 minutes in agony till they gave me a darn pain med. Which only contained about 20 capsules which I only took half of because I am not supposed to take pain meds. and they made me goofier than I am normally. Life lately has been a real BEE . Hope you get better. Excuse me for rambling but its 4:00 am and I am having a bad day. june

I'm glad you're feeling better. Be patient if you seem to "plateau" for a bit: it seems that the antidepressants can often take several weeks before you feel their full effects. For me, Paxil -- same family as Zoloft, I think -- has controlled my anxiety far better and more reliably than benzos (which are great for short-term bad panic for me, but don't level me out so effectively moodwise as my SSRI). So I'm glad I take it, and I hope the Zoloft will have good results for you too.

Hmmm well im not sure what to say for now. Still been takin the ativan 3 times a day but the level of anxiety throughout the day seems to be a bit lower, Maybe its in my head maybe its this zoloft i dunno. I noticed when i take the zoloft i get a bit anxious but i am guessin its just because its a new pill and i dunno what to expect from it so i just take it with the other! But things seem to be gettin better! thanks for the suport
