Someone once said to me "Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway" that is exactly what you did.
The more you do things you Fear the easier it will be to overcome!! Yes it does take time.
Also not a bad idea to visualise the things you fear - and visualise yourself doing them and how good you feel afterwards you will be surprised at how well this works.
