It took a while to find these support groups. But I have had SA for a long time now.. Think it came around when I was 18. (Now I am 33). I was always shy around girls & groups. Had panic attacks, mainly sweating, twitching & tons of embarrassment.

Interestingly, I had had other symptoms as well lots of fatigue, fuzzy memory, food allergies & body pains.

I went to lots of docs here in the US but I wasnt convinced that they knew what they were talking about. In 2005 things got worse. I was getting increasingly allergic to most foods. I quit my job. Took a long break 2 years not knowing what was wrong with my health.

Between all this, I would go out & party & go out to meet women. As long as I was drunk to an extent (2 beers) the SA didnt bother me. I didnt realize that I had SA at this point. But when I wasnt drunk, the SA would be on. My face would twitch & I would get all nervous etc..

Dear adobbs,

Welcome to HealingWell.  You have come to a wonderful site and the A & P forum members are all very kind and caring.  I am sorry you have been through such a rough time.  We have others with SA too so you are not alone.
Social Anxiety is a problem more common that you might think, and is often linked with serious depression. Social anxiety disorder is often called social phobia, an excessive fear of social situations.

There are several treatment strategies intended to help achieve the treatment goal of reducing social anxiety to manageable levels, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications.

I am sorry you have not had luck in the past but perhaps you might consider giving therapy another thought.

My wish for you is peace and happiness.  Keep posting as we are here to help you and we love new members.

Take care.
Kitt

Did you find out that all those other symptoms were SA?

I am sure many many many people use alcohol, other substances to help with different anxieties. (I know that's why I drank so heavily in college. too shy).

How are you now?

Adobbs,

Welcome to HW, you will find support here. I used alcohol for many years to cope with my anxiety/panic and in the end I just made things worse...

Kitt made some great suggestions so I won't add anything. Please keep posting and feel free to share. We do not judge here because we understand.
