Hello I am from the UC board but I have anxiety problems. I am not sure what my problems are exactly. I think that some or even alot of my anxiety problems come from my health problems but Im not sure. My doctor said that having a chronic health problem as well has family history of anxiety/depression can cause problems. I have trouble going out in places where there is alot of people or places that are really big.(walmart or school when there are big classes) I do well when my husband is with me and not so well when I am by myself. I guess I have social anixety and it seems to be getting worse. My question is I am not sure if what I am experiencing is panic attacks or not. I get really anxious and feel jumpy and it seems like everyone is looking at me my heart starts beating really fast and I start sweating. I sometimes just have to leave where ever I am and sometimes I can make it through whatever I am doing. Once I get to my car I am fine. My doctor has had me on citalopram for a while(20 mg). She says she can raise it but I am worried about being on too much medicine. She also gave me klonopin and said to take it 20 mins before I have to go to class or shopping. I am nervous about this as well. Does anyone else take these? Do you think these medicines are appropriate? Thanks for the imput.

Others here are more qualified to answer your questions about your meds.  I just wanted to tell you my panic attacks occur more often when I go out and am without my husband too.  What you are experiencing, the sweating and rapid heartbeat, etc. are signs of panic attacks.  I stopped doing things I enjoy (i.e. shopping) because of anxiety.  Hopefully your medications will help, because if you are avoiding things you normally enjoy, your life is controlled by the anxiety.  Also, (like you) my mother and my brother have anxiety attacks, so I think a tendency toward these things can be hereditary.  Sorry I do not have any answers regarding your medications, but hope you will be felling better soon!

Clonazepam is the generic for klonopin. I take mine at night b/c it makes me very sleepy. Have you thought about seeing a counselor? When I first started having mine, I didnt want to leave the house either. I couldnt drive or watch too much TV either. Watchig the news would throw me into an attack.

I have UC as well and it does take a toll on you mentally. You want to be sure to ask your Dr about how any anxiety meds may affect your UC. This Lexapro makes me sick to my stomach. I always have to take it w/food and some soda to calm my stomach.

Hang in there!

She made an appointment with a counselor for me but it takes a couple of months to get in. Can you drive after you take it? I take my citalorpram at night because it knocks me out.

Hi this is Kitt and welcome to  the A & P Forum.

I think you should try the increase in the med as sometimes upping your antidpressant meds wil do the trick.  If you take it at night, just take it earlier in the evening  so you don't feel so groggy in the AM. The SSRIs and SSNIs have anxiety properties.

RE the Klonopin, that is a tough one,  I would certainly test how you feel on it by trying it at home and see how you feel for a couple of hours afterwards.

My choice would be small dose of Valium as it is the longest acting of the benzos and it would carrry you through the day.  A small dose could be as low at 1 - 2 mg orally.  You may want to discuss that with your physician.

I have friends on the Crohns Board that use the Valium.  That is just my 2 cents worth today.

It usually hits me about an hour after I take it. I can't drive after that time. I try to plan my evenings accordingly. If I'm out w/friends for dinner or something, I'll take it and go home after 30 minutes after that time. I try to take it at the same time so that I dont wake up too groggy the next AM.

Hi hana24,

welcome to A/P boards, I don't have experience with the med you are on, but I know many who swear by it. If it makes you groggy I wouldn't get behind the wheel..too much at risk!

I take valium for IBS (and anxiety) and it really, really settles things for me. All the best!
