I have major depression and anxiety. I just recently been having trouble swallowing and having to try and get it down several times and then feel like I am gonna choke. I went through a fear of swallowing in 1988 right after I had my first child but it dont feel like the same thing, now everytime I eat I rethink if I even want to try and eat. can someone help me?

I have the same fear and have actually choked on food.  I can only give you a few suggestions that have helped me.  Make sure you take small bites.  Also, be sure you are not breathing in when you are eating and swallowing so the food doesn't go to your wind pipe.  I also have a very large glass of water with me and take swallows of water to make the food go down easier.  I think my problem started from having anxiety and having to eat among people I didn't know(at then husband's firm parties). I don't like to eat around people I don't know.  I have problems with restaurants and need to sit at a table in the corner or near a wall or in a booth.  But I still have trouble at home especially when I am all alone.  The ideas I stated though have helped me to get through meals and I just eat very carefully.  I hope I have given you some ideas and that they will work for you.  Take care.

Hi Momma,
Have you recently experienced Stress whether minor or major?I ask because for a solid 2 Weeks in October '07,I went through a tremendous amount of Stress (abandoned by my Fiance) and developed what felt like a problem swallowing. It also felt like I had something constantly in my Throat. All I did was continously swallow and stopped eating all solid Foods. When I dealt with his silly crazy Butt I was fine.
Feel better soon and all the best..this is a very scary thing..
Hugs to you

Hello and Welcome to HealingWell,
I am sorry your having this problem with the swallowing and choking sensation.  I would like to suggest you see your physician as this is not only a sx of anxiety but can also be a physical sx and perhaps associate with GERD or another problem.

WE have a GERD Forum too if you want to check that out you may learn some new things about this same problem.

We are not professionals so please do see your Doctor.  We are here for you to support you and to  provide a safe place for you to come and express yourself.

Welcome to the family

thanks to all that commented on my swallowing problem. I have not been taking my buspar medication because i lost my insurance and have not been able to afford it, but i have it now and it seems to be helping me a little, i think it may have been that i didnt have my meds in my system, thanks. mommajazz

I had this same problem a couple of years back and i do think it was caused by stress and anxiety ... Also you should check for acid reflux . . . It was the main reason for me fearing of choking because i felt like i forgot to swallow due to acid reflux causing me to have the swallowing problems.

MommaJazz,

Welcome. I'm glad you're getting some relief. Anxiety can bring out the most surprising symptoms sometimes. If the condition doesn't go away after you readjust to the buspar, do see a doctor to get checked out.
