Hi, I am new to this board.  Had a chance to read many of the posts here and already have found some benefit, thanks to everyone.
I seem to have a problem that initiates my deepest anxiety that I just don't know how to deal with and it centers around religion.  I get these very bad panic attacks which make me feel like I'm dieing.  After I get some control, it does make me think more about my mortality and it kind of sends me into my bible and other religious readings.  But instead of bringing comfort or freedom, these almost seem to make me even more anxious.
Just wondering if anyone else has struggled with this.  I know God loves me, I understand in my faith that I have been saved, etc., but I just can't seem to break this circular thought process.  Any suggestions??

Welcome to HealingWell.  I am wondering if you have seen your physician re the anxiety.  There are many therapies available to help you get out from under the anxiety.  I would like to suggest you see your physician for a good check up to make sure you do not have a medical problem and then ask for a reference to a good therapist.

The first thing I would like to advise you is to not read the bible if it is causing you more distress during your panic attacks. I am not telling you to stop reading your bible but just not right after your panic attack.

Try other modes of relaxation.  Take care andstick with us.

It's odd how things that are a comfort for some people are a trigger for others. Or even how the same thing can be both for the same person.

I've not experienced what you describe from seeking comfort in Bible study and religion, but I do know that sometimes something that I expect to make me feel better actually makes me feel guilty and worse because I'm not enjoying it or getting out of it what I would if "healthy." Could that be part of what you're feeling when reading? Just a thought.

Hang in there, and keep posting. This is a very supportive forum!

Since so many of my closest loved ones have passed away in the last while
I have not looked at a Bible nor have I
gone to Church
I am not ready
I know I will be when I feel it in my heart.......
I agree it might be time to stop reading the Bible for now
Just my opinion and nothing against religion intended

** PLZ take note TOTALLY Religious Threads as it is a rule breaker as is political threads and contaversial threads due to the many many diverse opinons that usuallly end up in argumentative threads.........**

Hi Rimo,

I was curious to know what it is that brings on the anxiety- is it a certain passage - i have a feeling i know what you're taking about. the bible has been a source of help for me but there are some passages that can bring on anxiety. when looking for spiritual answers in the bible i feel it's best to find a study bible that has a section with questions and answers-the answer part will tell you to look at a certain passage that may be of help or comfort to you. I actually had one that was given to me and it had questions like: are you feeling depressed? right next to it it would tell u to check such and such passage. I found it really helpful emotionally and spiritually.
