I started effexor xr a little over a week ago and two days after I started I've had loose stools. I have ulcerative colitis so diarrhea isn't uncommon for me right but this isn't normal diarrhea all things consider. I was wondering if any of you have noticed this. I don't want to stop the effexor because its doing wonders for my anxiety but if this keeps up I might have to :(

Effexor can definitely cause diarrhea which usually subsides in a couple of weeks.  If it lasts longer then that be sure to contact your physician.

Good Luck

I've checked effexors website and the list of side effects the pharmacy gave me and neither of them lists diarrhea as a side effect... I really hope it subsides soon!

Hi,

I was on effexor for three months and it did give me loose bowel movements for about two weeks. I have IBS, but this was much worse. It did go away, so if you can take the discomfort for a bit longer it might be worth it all. I wish you all the best, let us know how it works out okay?

Hi Sbauer,

I just wanted to say that I have read your signature somewhere else before, but I can't remember where. I have always liked that saying.

I saw my CNP earlier this week and it looks like the amitriptyline I am taking for my ulcerative colitis is interacting with the effexor causing diarrhea. Since I am remission with my UC and I refuse to stop the effexor I'm tapering the amitriptyline so hopefully that works!
Thanks for the responses :)
