With the holidays coming up fast and feasts upon us, I just wanted to remind people that studies have shown antacids such as Rolaids and Maalox to affect the absorption and peak plasma level of benzodiazepines.

Although it's worth mentioning that one study found that Aluminum hydroxide (Maalox) actually increased both absorption rate and peak plasma level (unknown how it would do this and it's just one study), I'm not sure I'd put a whole lot of stock in it.

Doctors and pharmacists have told me the same thing. Here's an article about benzos and Calcium carbonate (Rolaids):

http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/klonopin_d00197_rolaids-soft-chew_d00425.html

If I'm not mistaken just about every commonly available antacid is either based largely on Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide or Calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide. I've generally waited an hour before or after taking my Klonopin to take any kind of antacid and have found that to be enough. For me. Everyone's different.

That's my way of saying "Merry Christmas". Ain't I sweet?

Hi debaser.  My docs and pharmacist have given me the same info.  I generally take at least one or two Tums before bed each night so have to take my Xanax at least one hour prior to that.  I don't understand all the pharmaceutical reasons behind it, but have never questioned what the doctor and pharmacy told me.  But it is a great idea to post as a reminder.
