My doctor diagnosed me with anxiety panic disorder (finally) last month.  Put me on paxil and vistaril.  The paxil is not working .....the other pills just make me tired...and sleepy...they dont really help me with my panic attacks.  I want to ask for a different med.  Like a nerve pill....but I dont want her to think I am a druggie or something.  I just got back from the heart doc and I have a-fib....and I am panic attack mama right now....I have to quit smoking ....which is gonna be hell...I have 5 kids....Im stressed alot....how do I ask for a different med without her thinking I  am a weirdo.  My dad takes xanax and I took half of that the other day and it helped me so much.....I dont know how to go about asking for them.....
thanks for any advice I get.....

Hi South74

Sometimes it can take 6 to 8 weeks for a new medication to kick in and for you to feel a positive affect so maybe give the Paxil a bit longer to get in your system, I have not heard of vistaril so cant comment on that. Xanax belongs to a group of medications called Benzodiazepines these medications do work well for people with anxiety but on the down side can get addictive so I would recommend just to use when you really need one but I am not a medical professional so chat to your doctor. I have been on lots of different medications, I give them time to get into my system and then if i feel they are not helping I speak to my doctor or pdoc about it and on there advice change or up the medication I have not found this a problem so would say just tell the doctor how you are feeling and see what they say. I hope you find something which works for you have you given therapy a go? which works well for people with anxiety.

Take Care

Hi South74 I take Xanax myself, I take the lowest dose .25 mg, and only use when needed. Which for me is maybe 1-3 times a month. I am not worried about addiction for myself as I only use it ocasionally. Maybe you might want to stick with the Paxil and have the Xanax for those bad times. Just a thought!

Hi Ang

Sounds like a good idea to raise your paxil before trying something else see how it goes. I have had the same problem getting Benzo's from the doctor for the same reason as you say. See how things go and if they don't get better go back to your doctor. Look into CBT which is a type of therapy and combined with the right medication has good results in dealing with your anxiety, lots of members here have gone through CBT and I am due to have some in March. I wish all the best and keep posting to tell us how you are getting on.

Take care

Hi Ang :)

That is what I call my sister too or "Aggie" which she punches me for, lol :) Major tomboy :)

Don't feel afraid to ask you doc for help when you need it. So many of us do that and I'm very guilty myself. I do think it is a good idea to see if he/she will work on upping your Paxil for awhile to see if this is helpful. And like previously stated, maybe you can take the benzo every so often? I don't know much about this combo but it seems to work for others, and hopefully you and your doctor can work out a system that is tailor made for you :)

I hope you find your balance soon!

Peace :)
Take care and have a wonderful day! . . . Your Bro . . . Sam :)

Hi, Ang!

Definitely ask, and see how that goes. You might find it easier to get things across to your doctor clearly if you make a list for him/her of how you're feeling, specifically. Being able to think in detail about how you're responding to the current meds might make it easier for your doctor to consider the best adjustment. For instance, you might expand on when you feel sleepy - soon after taking the meds, much later, always the same time of day?

Good luck!

Do you think Xanax is good? My friend get it from rxtrue.com/prices.php?aff_id=37754&sub=347 And he is satisfied with results

Please do be your own best advocate and as others have stated the Paxil takes 4 - 6 weeks to reach it's therapeutic dose.  Talk straight with your physician and tell him exactly how you feel.  Ask for what you need and often a little anti-anxiety med will help short term until you get the full benefit of the Paxil.

Take care and know we are here to support you.

Gentle Hugs

Good Morning Gordon,

You posted "Do you think Xanax is good?"

I would like to request that you start your own thread on this question and please share a bit more info.

Why are you asking and good for what as it has several uses.

Thank you so much

KItt
