. . . from my hernia surgeries last month. Ever since I was released (after 16 days) in the hospital, I have had increasing anxiety. Cannot see my shrink for another, long week. Medical doctor gave me xanax, and it's not doing the job. I finally got him to up my dosage to 1.0 mg from 0.5 mg today. Haven't taken the 1.0mg yet because it's not time.

I do sleep, but only for a few hours, waking up anxious inside. I cannot concentrate on anything anymore. It's like I always got that "fight or flight" feeling.

Hey! We need to know what you've been doing for the anxiety other than the Xanax. The med is a start. But you also need to be doing other things. We've all been there when we feel like quitting, but I can assure you. It gets better! You will go on to become a husband and father. You will do fun and wonderful things! You have your father, brother and us. Please respond and tell us what else you are doing to help your anxiety!

I've experienced fight or flight feelings and I can understand how difficult, confusing and even painful the experience can be.

I had 4 days of constant fight or flight, during the holidays when the hospital and pharmacy was closed - I was between changing anti-anxiety meds, and had run out of the first one and had none of the second. I used a technique to calm myself down by finding music that I found very agreeable and made myself lay in bed with the lights out. I made sure I laid there and listened to music for atleast 10 minutes, concentrating on the words, and making sure I was breathing calmly. I was able to catch enough relief to get my heart rate down and relax a bit... although the relief was temporary it made the day more bareable.

Just remember that there is an end to the attack and you just need to hold in there :D

I'm glad I met you,

Please take care.

Hi Mark,

This is Kitt, if my memory is correct you were released from the hospital around December 16th.  The meds you had were Rx pain meds, OTC pain meds, Ativan 1mg tabs, Xanax 5.mg to be taken three times per day, Wellburtin and Celexa.  You said you could not see you P-doc for a week and you were geting some of the meds from your regular physician.

IMHO your Pdoc should be handling your mental health meds and be well aware of all meds you are taking. You are getting meds from more then one source and mixing them which is dangerous.

Please see your Pdoc and get your meds straightened out.

We have lots of threads to help you with alternative ways to get to sleep.

A number of treatments can help reduce the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder . Most effective treatment plans will incorporate both self-help measures and therapy. In more severe cases of GAD, medication may also be used.

Do take care and know we are here to help you learn ways to heal as well as vlidate your feelings.

Sincerely,

Kitt

Thanks, all.

I am on disability for clinical depression. So i did not work since 1995. But my anxiety started after I was released from the hospital.

My psychiatrist got the message and prescribed Klonopin. Wish me luck!!

I've taken Klonopin. It's a great med! Remember to do other things to quiet your anxiety. Learn some relaxation techniques, walk, cut out sugar and caffeine. You will feel better soon if you do all these things. Good luck!

Good Morning Mark,

When I had my major meltdown 3 years ago I was on Klonopin and I did find it was fast acting but once I got to the point where my anxiety and depression were more under control I was taken off Klonopin and switched to Valium which is longer acting and we weaned down the amount of benzo I was using.

Good luck with all your meds and a warm welcome to the family of A & P.

Kitt

Thank you for sharing this Kitt :) I have been on Klonopin for seven + years now after taking Ativan for several years, and I think that I am going to ask my doc to schedule me down on this benzo with Valium also. I was young when I started and did not care about addictions then. But that is hindsight and today is a new day for further recovery :) I just want to take it nice and easy with the change :)
