HI EVERYONE.  I NEED SOME ADVICE.  I SUFFER FROM PANIC DISORDER WITH AT TIMES AGORAPHOBIA.  I AM GOING TO BE GOING ON A PLANE IN MARCH TO ARIZONA AND THE FLIGHT IS 5 HOURS LONG.  I'M SO FRIGGIN TERRIFIED.  I TAKE XANAX BUT IT WILL NOT BE ENOUGH TO CALM ME DOWN.  DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I CAN TAKE OR DO TO BE CALM ON THE PLANE?  I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE A PANIC ATTACK ON THE PLANE.  I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO JUST TAKE SOME MEDS TO MAKE ME GO TO SLEEP.  ANYONE WITH ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.  THANKS ALL.

Bella,

Welcome to the A & P Forum. If you put in "fear of flying " into the search above you will find other threads that address this very same problem.

Also here is a site you may find very helpful.

Have you talked with your physician about increasing your med a bit just for the flight time?  I wish you the best  and I know you can overcome this fear.

Bless you
KItt

Bella, begin learning biofeedback now. By the time you get on the plane, you will be trained and it will help. There are great resources on this forum that will help you do this. Also, do not think ahead to the flight with scary thoughts. Your anticipatory anxiety will go through the roof. Not good. Do you have a therapist who can help, also?

Hi Bella!

It's nice to meet you and I hope you follow the advice given to you. I also feel that if you start working with some therapy. . . Talk to your doctor about your meds and your impending flight, that you will be strong enough to just do it :)

Good luck to you!

I was a flight attendant up untill last year and Trust me if you let the flight attendant know of your anxiety, they will assist you and inform you of every sound, bump and talk you through the flight...I promise you it is quite common and there is always Portable oxygen on the plane for these types of frightened flyers...I dont suggest doubling any dose as it might work againt you in a panic state....TRUST the Flight Attendant and you will be fine! They know what to do. Also I would advise talk to your doc but TRUST the flight attendants...They are well trained and love the challenge and to assist individual needs as flying gets boring for them day in and day out...They will love to take care of you! gillxx

Bella,

Welcome, and do check out those old threads. We had one early last year when one of our members found some *really* helpful strategies, but I'm afraid I don't remember what they are.

Certainly ask you doctor about a different dosage of your meds before your flight. I think that's pretty common, but you want to be sure it's safe.

Are you taking the trip for some special, happy reason? Thinking about what you're doing afterwards, and trying to picture how much you'll enjoy it can help a little bit too.
