Has anyone had any experience with St. John's Wort as an alternative to prescription medications?

The natural remedies I tried, for both depression and anxiety, didn't work.  I think I'd have had to take massive doses of the herbal stuff to make any impact - too much.

I also tried Echinnacia ( sp) and St Johns Wort
No luck

What does work to help me get comfy and cozy at bed with my meds is a nice HOT cup of milk with some cinnamon on it

It ha a natural ingredient when heated is activated
I love it so much never a night w/o it

Im similar, Lyn. i have found the most amazing herbal caffeine free 'chai' tea, infused with cinnamon, vanilla, cloves- very mild spicy etc- it comes in a little pack and you just boil the kettle, add water and instant chai latte! its so relaxing.
Yum- makes me want one now, except we here in aus are still dealing with the mother of all heat waves... redface

I see i'm not alone with it not working, i've been taking it because i wont be seeing my dr. until the end of February. It calms me a bit but i get really sleepy, and it was beginning to affect my vision i think, so i stopped taking it.

What about kava? Anyone have any info on this? I'm not really big on prescription meds thats why i'm asks about these herbal treatments. I've read that it is really good for anxiety, works quickly at relaxing you and doesnt really alter your mental state but i would appreciate anyone else's input about it.

Kava does work, but there are some concerns about its effect on the liver. When I'm going through a particularly stressful time, though, I take it. I'm thinking that the claims about possible liver damage may be a bit exaggerated; it's been used for hundreds of years by other cultures.

One thing that works is inositol. It can be found in most health food stores, and it comes in either capsule or powder form. I tried it for PMDD (my worst anxiety times) and it made such a world of difference I almost cried with relief. I actually would have kept taking it on a regular basis except for one thing: the price. Inositol is expensive, and for anxiety, doses are high. If money was no object, though, it would be a regular part of my daily regimen. It really works that well.

You're welcome, Mizzbeeutiful. Because of the controversy surrounding it, you can rarely find kava in a grocery store anymore, but you should be able to find it in any health food store.

Please, please keep in mind that Kava works much like Xanax does, so do not combine the two. If you take kava, don't take any anti-anxiety or tranquilizing medications at the same time.

Good luck!
