Do I have obsessive disorder? I have depression and anxiety, but I worry about the same things every day. And those thoughts make me anxious and depressed.

Or is it my anxiety and depression causing the thoughts, the thoughts of doom?

Hi MarkofKane -

Well, I can only tell you from my own personal experience - a real doc would have to diagnose your specific conditions.  But I definitely have obsessive thoughts and it is separate from my panic disorder.  Not that they are not unrelated by any means!  But I can have the panic and anxiety under control while still having the obsessive ruminations.

It's OCD for me (obsessive compulsive disorder).  I will have uncontrollable thoughts that run circles in my head about everything from minor issues like a school affair to death and terminal illness!  I personally have found that an SSRI helps me stop those obsessive thoughts - but I'm also currently working on new techniques like thought stop/thought replace, distraction, etc.

I would suggest seeing a doctor to help you determine the root of the thoughts - it's like what came first, the chicken or the egg? :)  Is your anxiety causing the thoughts or are the thoughts causing your anxiety?

The obsessive thoughts are the worst - I can't stand them - so I do feel for you and you are not alone!

Thanks, I have a doc, but cannot see him until a month from now. I need to tell him, because I do play over the same worries in my head over and over.

I think many of us that are anxious feel things like this from time to time, and I think the best first step you should take is to make and appt. with your doctor and tell him/her what you have told us here. Your doc could help you so much my on meds and/or getting you set up with some therapy my friend. I hope everything works out for the best and you can always go up to our Anxiety-Panic Resources thread at the top of the page and click the link to MoodGYM. It is a free online CBT course that helps deal with Obsessive Scary Thoughts.

Take care and Good Luck!

Hi there,

I belive my thoughts and feelings have changed due to my ongoing anxiety and depression. I know mine is a result of second guessing every emotion and decision, incase it is not valid. In turn leading to almost obsessive over thinking and sometimes resulting in feelings of doom. It is a feeling I know to well...The good old doom, you definatley know you are alive when you get that feeling!!! haha!  Anyway, dont go adding anything else to your list with thinking you have ocd...just tell yourself you have anxiety that is where the toughts come from and let it go.  Just my advice. Goodluck, gillxx

After my initial panic attack almost 7 years ago, obssessive thoughts are what hunt me the most. I don't have the compulsion, so I'm not OCD, but I do obssess ALL the time. My biggest obssession is that I'm crazy and will end up in a mental institution. When I have my anxiety under control, I can brush that thought away, however, when I'm under stress like right now, I feel completely helpless, depressed and it's almost impossible to stop obssessing about being/going crazy.

When it gets this bad, I talk to my therapist and start taking meds again.
