A'ight now that I've fully made a nuisance of myself, if anyone's still willing to chat w/ me here goes. :)

I've had people close to me with OCD and anxiety and I don't feel there's enough information out there on what it is like to live with obsessions and compulsions and anxiety. Most acquaintances I know with anxiety disorders complain that they can't find books and so forth with discussions of how people figured they have OCD or some other anxiety disorder (especially if they have another form of OCD besides germ OCD... like maybe harm OCD), their experiences telling friends and lovers, managing work, deciding whether to take meds or alternative medications....all in all what it is like living with OCD and anxiety. I'd like to get more info out there. I am a sociologist so I figure I'm up for the job. I also want to know how the Internet has helped you or hindered you in coping with anxiety and OCD. I started a study a few years ago, but did not get enough respondents to really make it into what I wanted. Therefore,
I'm looking to meet people on here and talk to them about all of the above.
I won't use your real name, you don't need to have been officially diagnosed, but you need to be at least age 18. :)

Message me on here or contact me at
Cheers.

Because you have your email already at the side in envelope I removed it from here as NON members Spammers and all sorts of ppl can and would get it
It is for your protection and security only

Anyone interested in helping out plz do email above poster if you care too

Just going to toss in my 2 cents, using materials that are posted in the forums is not appropriate IMHO as they are posted by  members that may not want what they say in the forums used in a  research project. I think they are consider private to this forum.

I know I would not want the content of my posts used without my permission.   If I chose to participate in a research study it  would be in private only.

I would agree to help you but the one thing I do not have is OCD but I could use a little.  smhair

Thanks

Kitt

yes I agree that the Internet is a great tool for connecting with others...that is why I think it can help us be more social.
GreenGrove, thanks much, I look forward to talking with you.
Kitt....this is exactly the problem. People who post on this site and other open forums (open in the sense that you don't have to be approved or a member to read and to post) are essentially making their posts publicly available to anyone on the Internet. Anyone with Internet access can read the posts so it's basically public and does not require a researcher to get approval from said poster. Posts on a lot of such sites are even searchable on larger search engines. To make it comparable to the non-Internet world, generally if I were to go to a public place like a streetcorner I could watch people and study them and not need their permission. As soon as I start to interview people on the streetcorner (do more than make casual streetcorner conversation) I would need to get their approval.
The tricky part is I recognize that some people on sites don't really realize how public they have made their information. Yet others on these sites desperately want people to hear their stories and that's why they post. So hence the dilemma. And as a researcher, if you're doing a study about how people use the Internet.... then participating on boards and studying boards is vital.
I really appreciate your comments and feedback as I make these decisions.

I might help us to see your IRB approval in the future.

When I originally got the study approved I sent the moderator my questions and IRB form. I didn't want to clog up the site but here is what a person who would agree to an interview would see. Due to the nature of having a disorder (potentially stigmatizing) people do not have to sign my form, just verbally agree.

Good Morning,

Peter  has given this member  permission to use posts off the website.   From the information I have received he basically conveyed that the material is copyrighted and the website would have to be mentioned.

I guess I was wrong in assuming that our posts would not be used for research without  our permission. As Peter owns the site, he owns the materials/posts on the site.

Thank you

Kitt

No mutual respect on "implied" privacy means no participation in this study for me. . . I only accepted the offer to become a moderator to be able to help members a bit more with peer support which kind of needs a little "trust" to be able to open up fully about issues.  Now I see that I was so very wrong in my assumptions.

Sorry, and thank you for your time, but I have to follow my morales and protect the privacy of my peers that have put their faith in me.

Sincerely,
Sam/Green Grove

GreenGrove:
My sincerest apologies for offending you.
This is a site where anyone can read the posts. I posted here to contact people for private interviews, where they would sign an informed consent form which you can see posted. The issue of using posts came up because Lyn suggested it now and a few members suggested it years ago. If you can see those old posts, it was brought up in the past. At that point I felt ethically concerned about doing it so I got permission from the administrator to do it. If safety and privacy were concerns now, they have always been a concern. I purposefully contacted Kitt by e-mail to let Kitt know that the site is not as private as Kitt thought it was. I brought all these issues up to hear people's thoughts and concerns and to make you aware that what you thought perhaps was private is available wherever the Internet is. It seems I did a disservice by doing this though.

You have not offended me.  More than anything I'm in shock because I care about my HW family very much.  I think that the ethical thing you want to do with the informed consent form is a very good and respectful thing.  You should be commended for this.  I do appreciate you bringing the whole truth to all of our attentions though, because it was very much needed.  You take care and I wish you the best of luck with your research!

Sincerely,
Sam/Green Grove

And there it is. . . I knew I had read it this & now I'm upset that I was hard on myself, thinking that I was ignorant in my assumptions.  Now I can pull out of the worst day of depression that I have experienced since 2001. . . And the anxiety has not been so great either.

We do have to remember that anybody can read what we write. This information is all over the world. Though nobody knows us personally, the information is still there.

There was a thread on medications on the fibromyalgia forum. Somebody googled narcotics and it came up on their computer. So there are many different ways for this information to get in the eyes of the wrong people. I think this is a risk that we all take just posting on the forum. It is scarey, but it is true.

I hope that none of this causes any of the members to stop posting.

Hugs, Karen
