You may have low esteem if you:

  • Are not living in the present. You’re always thinking about the past or worrying about the future.
  • Always want what’s just out of reach in order to be happy.
  • Do things to undermine your own success.
  • Put yourself down.
  • Avoid real intimacy because you fear people won’t like you.
  • Job-hop because you’re unhappy no matter where you go.
  • Have a serious addiction, like alcohol, drugs or shopping.
  • Don’t trust others.
  • Apologize excessively.
  • Constantly seek approval and validation from others.
  • Neglect your physical appearance.
  • Have a strong need for material possessions to show others how important you are.
  • Believe you are not good enough.
  • Fear new things or change.
  • Have a lot of aches and pains.
  • Are overly sensitive to criticism.
  • Can’t get over a defeat or disappointment.
  • Are hesitant to express ideas.
  • Put others down or are overly crticial of others.
  • Work harder and harder to extract some sort of value from work, but can’t find it.
  • Boast and exaggerate, with a need to self-promote any successes.
  • Don’t make eye contact.
  • Feel hopeless.
  • Don’t want to be held accountable.
  • Lack energy.
  • Are passive.
  • Try to portray a false image to others because you don’t like who you really are.
  • Lack a supportive network and feel isolated.
  • Are anxious.
  • See a small task as large and intimidating.
  • Believe other people’s needs come before yours.
  • Lose your temper a lot.
  • Blame others for your problems. Reference: Healthy Living

Dear Family,

As I read the list above, I see myself in many of these  examples and I did a WOW, that is me............it was a wake up call that I need to do something to get my self esteem up where I feel better about myself.

I hope you all join in and together we can help each other.

Gentle Hugs

Kitt

I honestly have no idea, to be honest with you. Some of those traits match me, but a majority don't. Sometimes, I think I am kind of split in the middle... One side has very low self-esteem, whereas the other side does not. Sometimes, I think I even have too much self-esteem at some points.
I think I am being picked on by life, sometimes. But's that okay. Life and I are good buddies... I know life doesn't mean no harm. It just is the way it is. I can accept that.

Kitt

Im like you and could put a tick next to most of those in the list so I must have low self esteem which is not something I have really thought about before and something I would like to improve and can see how good self esteem will make me feel better.

I relate to what Celey said. Some of the points are me, but the majority are not. I agree too that you could say I am split down the middle.

I am also in many of those blush

Last year I used to read books to be more positive. It worked for me then I stopped a while and felt back down. I guess i'll have to get back to them to boost back my self esteem.

I see myself in a lot of the points Kitt listed above. I think we can improve our self esteem by writing down positive things about ourselves on index cards and keeping them handy. If we read them regularly, our minds will begin to believe what is written. I have the index cards already filled out but I forget to read them on a regular basis.

I didn't have a WOW moment as I have known for what seems like forever that I have low self-esteem.  I am that list (well a lot of it).  I am constantly working on thinking more highly of myself.  A work in constant progress.

Most of them are me too!  I'm working on it though.  Some days are better than others.  I'm going to have soo many post it notes all over my house to remind myself of all the good things about myself and life.  I'll have to remind myself to take them all down when i have company. smilewinkgrin

At one point in my life, many things from the list was a big part of me. . . But now I can actually see that I am getting better with the CBT and my slow brain reprogramming. I am really proud of this and myself, and I pray that everyone of you can find this kind of success :) To me, after have got to know you all, I don't see why any of you would have low self confidence. . . You all are some of the nicest and most caring people I have ever met in my life and are just top-notch! It would make me very happy to see all pick up on the CBT/therapies and stand proud 'n satisfied with yourselves!

Lot's of love to all of you and many blessings. . . :)

A LOT of those apply to me... only a few dont, but thats because I dont feel a need to exaggerate myself to others or whatever. I simply dont care about much anymore. I would say that I am much more abusive to myself now than I was before. Before it scared me to death, but now its almost as if I dont care. That pretty much lets me though that before and now I am different. It makes me sad that I feel like I dont care about myself anymore... even though I suppose I do. And I should...

But, anyways, most of those apply to me.......

I am very pleased that you could all read and relate to the traits and most of you know yourselves well.  Now you know what work needs to be done. idea

Thank you all for participating in the poll.  It helps to question ourselves honestly and know we are a work in progress.

There is no one that is perfect, we are all just human beings.

I wish you Peace.

Dear Big Sis,

I am so glad you found this thread helpful.  I think we can always work harder at learning to love ourselves and accept that we are who we are and that we are worthy of love and respect, of friends and happiness.  We have invested a large amount of time in  learning to deal with our feelings, we will continue our progress daily.

May you always walk in Peace,

Love,
Lil Sis/Kitt
