I am a 41 SWM which has been experiencing anxiety (or so the Dr claims) for the last several months.  My story is unique due to a trama I went through about 5 years ago that I believe is still in my head which makes me question everything the Dr. claims or advises.
Back in 04, I had a herniated disc in lower back so severe that after MRI they admitted me to pain management in hospital for 3 days.  During these 3 days I do not recall anything at all!  Oxycotin and morphine injections kept me out of pain and sleeping most of the day and night.  When I was released, I went home for the night and could not wake up the next morning.  My parents called ambulence to take me to ER in which they were informed my kidneys have failed and suffered a stroke!  I was in ICU for five days and had one session of dialisis to jump start the kidneys.  They cliam the kidneys were stunned due to over medication which caused possibly the blood to change in body causing stroke.  During 5 days in ICU I went through withdrawls so severe that I needed to be chained down and put in a "twilight" sleep to minimize reactions.  On a positive side, I awoke 5 days later and released with no side effects.  Never had kidney problems before or since that event and no side effects from stroke.
Now I have been having what the Dr claims is anxitey attacks the past couple months.  It starts with a warm flushing feeling starting at legs, going to arms, and chest.  SOmetimes it brings on rapid heartbeat.  Also, severe upper back ache but not really any chest pains.  Also, I lost 70 lbs durinbg the past 12 montsh which I thought would make me feel better.  I feel worse.
I went to ER had EKG during attack and they claim it is not heart.  ALso had a Holon Monitor put on for a month and recorded heart beat during these hot flashes last 30 days and that all came out fine.  Had complete blood work tests, thyroid test also fine.  Blood pressure and blood sugar level better than ever!  I had x-rays of upper back and chest all fine.  I took it a step further and had CT calcium scan of heart and that came out perfect.  In addition, I also had a stress test with contrast done 1.5 years back which was great. I tell my Dr I want every test done, MRI or cat scan of brain to make sure it is not something serious and he just looks at me saying its anxiety.  Unfortunately, this is the same hospital I had visited 5 years back that caused the problems I experienced with the kidney failure/stroke.  It is like I do not trust any of them and want them to double check.  I was put on Zoloft for a while but it seemed to make the hot flashes in body worse.  Now just take 5 mg Alprazolam 3x daily as needed.  Usually on take 1/2 5mg tablet 2x day due to my past fear of medication.
I guess my question is are these hot flashes or rushes through the body common with anxiety?  I know many women experience this but not sure of any men?  I guess it is true everything starts to go downhill when you are 40!  To add to it I stopped drinking coffee 3 weeks back and i was a BIG coffee drinker (10 cups a day at least).  Any comments or advice are welcomed! I am trying everything to battle thisincluding seeing a therapist, therapy, messages, you name it!  Maybe I am concentrating on it too much!

You certainly have been through alot, I'm sorry about your experience with the hospital.  I know that alot of people here have health anxiety, me included, and what you went through would be enough to make you question your health and those that provide you with medical care, that's for sure! I do get hot flushes alot, but I am a female and that does come with the territory, but I do know that the flushes can definitely be a symptom of anxiety.  Hopefully another man will have some more input on that for you.
I am glad that you are seeking therapy, as that can be very helpful.  Are you using cbt?  That is the one thing that has gotten me through the worst of the panic and anxiety.  This site is also an amazing help for me, there are so many others who are going through the exact same thing and it's comforting to not feel alone and have someone confirm that your symptoms are truly anxiety.  Sorry that I can't be more helpful, but I hope you will keep posting here!

Sounds like some anxiety to me and for that, I am sorry. I have had anxiety for a while now. When it first happened to me, I really did think that I was having a heart attack. I was so scared. I was at the ER like 4 different times. I didn't believe them when they said that i was fine that I was just having an anxiety attack. They did a EKG and all that good stuff and everything came back normal. They were like, "just calm down and take a deep breath" and I was like, "You try relaxing when you feel like you're dying." It was quite the ordeal when it happened. After all the tests and going through 3 different turns out that it really is anxiety. So, I know that none of this has helped you at all but just wanted to share a little bit about what happened with me. This is a really good site to post in. The people here reallly make you feel like you are part of the family. You take care of yourself and keep coming back!!!
