So I had some good days. Then I began researching more into the whole Type 2 diabetes things and I'm almost paralyzed with fear. Blindness, amputations, renal failure - is that my future?! So afraid? I'm only 42, I have a young child, and I'm so afraid. So afraid. So very afraid. sad

I would suggest you not google things on the internet. They usually have to put in the possibilities of what "could happen", but I think with diabetes if you takes watch your blood sugar levels, eat properly and follow your doctors orders you will avoid the bad side effects.

I have a 30+ year history with a chronic and uncurable disease. There are many bad things that COULD happen if I didn't take care of myself, eat right and take my meds, but because I do as I am supposed to I am much healthier. JMHO

Dear njam,

As a fellow suffer of anxiety please stop googling the sx on the internet.  You can always find all the horrible things that may happen to you but most likely will not.  You are catastrophysizing the worst case scenario in your mind and that is causing your anxiety to sky rocket. smhair

Please do not anticipate the most horrible outcomes.  It feels to me like you have health anxiety.  Health anxiety is an initial overreaction/misinterpretation of a real abnormality whereas hypochondriacs do not have any abnormalities to start with and fully fabricate - by visual imagination, their illnesses.

I would really like to see you working through the CBT therapy online or in some sort counseling.

Please know that we care.

You must take care of your body and follow the doctor's instructions. If you do these things, you will be fine! No more googling diseases or symptoms. It will scare the heck out of you. Please take your mind off of what you read and enjoy everyday!

Thanks all. There is no doubt my anxiety is health related. I am awful about googling stuff and terrifying myself! Kitt, I am seeing a counsellor and have another appointment at the beginning of May (she's away right now). I will look into CBT. Thank you for caring - it truly does help.

Njam,

I have horrible health anxiety, and indeed symptom surfing is one of the worst things we can do for ourselves. It sounds so reasonable to say we're just trying to be well-informed, but the info on the net is biased, in my opinion, toward the negative. Professional websites probably can't afford to miss warning people of the worst-case scenarios (that's my guess). On personal pages, blogs, and the like, there are probably more folks with problems seeking answers than folks with success stories to share. It's a great resource, but in the fight aginst HA, it's usually done my more harm than good.

That's great news that you're seeing a CBT therapist soon. I hope it works out well for you - be sure to give it time, as the skills you discuss and learn take practice. Lots of us have had good results from CBT.

Glad to have you on the forum!

Hi Njam,

I can't really add to the wonderful advice you've already received here, but please know that I support you and I am glad that you're looking into the CBT. It's helped me a lot! Best wishes to you, and please keep posting to let us know how it's going.
