I was given celexa to help me with the anxiety from UC. The first day I took a whole tablet & felt like I was in overdrive all day. I was very jittery. So I have been taking 1/4 of a tablet for 3 days & I still get the same effects. I feel like I have problems concentrating on every day things. I can't wait until evening when the effects start to wear off. Has anyone else felt this way? What do you advise?

Hi Winter,

Many of the members have been on this medication.  Each person is different in how they react to medicaiton.

If you type Celexa into our Search Feature you will find other threads that address this very topic and you should find lots of members view on this particular medication.

I took prozac for a little while about 4 years ago. I had to take 1/4 klonipin with it to counteract the jittery effects. I may have to do that again until I get it working for me.

I am just now calming down from the jitters. I have a head ache for 2 days. I feel tired but I can't stop my feet from moving when I sit with my legs crossed. don't think this is working for me

Hi Winter

I used to take Celexa to help with my GAD and was taking the max dose of 60mg. I changed medications as I felt Celexa was not helping me but we are all different and what works well for one person may not work so well for an other. It takes a while for your body to get used to a new medication and the first couple of weeks you can experience various side effects which tend to lessen after a few weeks, But can take upto 6-8 weeks before you feel any positive affect from the medication so my advice would be to stick with it and see how it goes and keep regular contact with your doctor. Something to look into is CBT or similar talk therapies as I have found that they work really well in helping me to deal with my anxiety better just a suggestion?. I hope things start to improve for you soon.

Hi Winter,

I had the same problem on Celexa. Really annoying at times. But I also enjoyed the extra energy. My house was spotless. Never a dirty dish that sat in the sink longer then 5 minutes. Heck dinner dishes where while everyone was eating. It was nice.

But keep an eye on those jitters. If they turn into tremors is where the concern starts. And tremors can stay with you through out the rest of your life.

Some times the "jitters" are part of the effects of A/D meds. As for starters your depression is slowly going away. Which means extra energy. Your anxiety starts to reduce. Which leads to less stress and worried thoughts, and again more energy.

More positive energy.

Imbrace it if you can. Enjoy it. This is the chance for you to take up exercises, long walks, crafts with kids etc. Anything to keep ya busy.

It should reduce in a week or 2. If it really bothers you talk with the doctor and see if you can get something to calm ya down some.

I on the other hand wish that side effect stayed with me.. I loved the extra energy. But I also didn't look at it as jittery. Or nervous twitching. I felt great and just didn't feel like sitting around doing nothing for a change.

Take Care

thanks for all your input. I used prozac before & it really helped me & I didn't have near the same jittery feelings. I think I will talk to me Dr about switching back to it. With celexa, I felt tired but jittery. I still didn't feel like doing anything. I just wanted the jittery feeling to go away so I could rest. I also started getting daily headaches & my head felt strange when I would move it from side to side like I was having problems focusing.

Hey Winter,

I have used Prozac in the past and had great success with it too. I think that might be a wise idea to talk to your doctor about going back on it, especially since it worked well for you before. I used it for 2 years and it helped me to get over the hump so to speak.

I react strange to medicines anyway. I can't tolerate a full dose. I still had some prozac left over so this morning, I took my 1/4 of a 10 mg tablet of prozac & 1/4 of .5 mg of klonipin & feeling a lot better. I took this combination in the past & didn't get the jittery feelings but felt like it helped. I feel that when I get back to work & expel some of this excess energy that I will be fine. thanks for all your help. hopefully this will last me through the entire day. I am taking my klonipin with me just in case. I already have it cut into 1/4th.
