Hello Lucy and welcome to HealingWell.

The maximum dosage should not exceed 4 mg/day.  Please remember I am not a professional and your best person to verify this info would be a pharmacist.

Hi,

I've been taking xanax regularly for about 15 years.  I also have .25mg pills and right now take 2 and 1/2 pills a day.  My dose has been up and down over the years, as low as 1/2 of a .25 mg up to as many as 8 pills depending on where I've been with my anxiety.  I've weaned off of the larger doses many, many times and I just do it very slowly and haven't had any problems with coming off of it...just have to do it slowly.  I guess that I wouldn't be too comfortable with being told to take more to help me sleep.  There are other things that can help with that besides xanax, and in my opinion those are things I'd look into.

I take Xanax 0.5 mg 1-3 times a day if needed. I mostly take it at night before bed along with an herbal supplement called Sleep Md. It is sold over the counter and works great for me. Try to ween yourself from Xanax as much as you can. You have to do it gradually so your body doesn't go into shock. Hope this helps and you get the much needed rest.

I dont believe i would cope without my Xanax- it has been the best anti-anxiety med i have ever used. In combination with my anti-depressant (Zoloft) my anxiety is managed and i can lead a somewhat 'normal' life.

I have been taking Xanax for more than 6 years. The pill is 0.5mg - which I cut if half and take with Lexapro 10 mg. daily. I only take the "whole" pill a couple of times. I agree with Maz "Xanax is the best anti-anxiety med".
In fact, if for any reason I needed to leave in a hurry, I would take my dog and Xanax!!!. Seriously, when we travel, first is Xanax then my passport.

SOMEONE PLEASE RESPOND!!!!
I've only been on xanax for about 4 mnths....I was wondering how I should be taking it also! They started me on a .5 x3 times a day, but when I first started it, I was breaking it in 1/2 and usually only taking it twice a day. so we lowered it to a .25 x2 a day, but I started needing it more than 2x a day some days. So now they've upped it back to the .5 2x a day, should I take that much at once, or keep breaking it in 1/2 and taking it 3-4 times a day? I haven't really noticed any major side effects.....who can tell with all the symptoms of a panic attac...LOL!!!!! But I've been getting better.....SLOWLY! Still have some bad days....and I'm a constant worrier about everything now! My life has totally changed! I have two small children, and I don't feel like my family is getting ALL of me because I hate going shopping, SCARED to death to go to Wal-mart! Doen't want to take my son to his ballgames alone, scared to run and play.....will my heart explode, or will I pass out?!?! I've had a panick attac in all these situations, so now it's made me scare to return to them.......how do I get over this??????? Is it because I'm just dulling the anxiety by taking little doses at once, or should I take larger doses to feel better and feel better longer????

The best thing you can do is learn to cope with the anxiety/panic attacks. You could educate yourself. There are many great books for sale on this website that would help you. Don't avoid places or situations. Avoiding only prolongs getting better. Remember, it's not the places or situations that bring on the attacks. It's the way you're thinking.

Your Xanax questions should be asked of a pharmacist or your doctor. They will know how you are supposed to be taking the drug. Xanax is not a long term answer and that is why I suggested you begin educating yourself.

Learn some relaxation techniques, also. The symptoms will not hurt you. They're scary but harmless. The more you fear them the longer they last. The key is acceptance of the anxiety and riding it through calmly. One day you'll find yourself anxious but not afraid. You'll be a calmer person. Let us know how you're doing!

Hi..thanks for the reply, however i have had this for 15 years and learned all the techniques to deal with it and do really good, however some of the time you can have a chemical imbalance that cant be helped and you need medicine. So for some people the techniqes work  alone without meds and for others we need help with meds.
Thanks

That's true. The panic attacks are not brought on by negative thinking or "what-ifs". But you can learn to cope with a panic/anxiety attack without using medication. There are many people who do it.

Hello artz_tl

You may want to start a thread of your own as I am sure you will find the members to be very caring and responsive.  There is much good info here in this thread that was started by ILUVLUCY.

Aries gave great info and I agree,  talk with your physician and pharmacist about your medication.  Please do stick with us as we love new members.

Wishing you the best,

Kitt

Thanks ALL!!!! I am very new to this, I know now that I have had panic attacks for YEARS, but had no idea what it was! about 6 mnth ago thay had gotten so bad that I wouldn't let me husband leave my side....but I'd just set and cry or feel like I was dying! He took me to the dr, I'm 36.....we thought maybe I was premenopausal! They tried me on prozac......made me sooo sick! Then we tried Lexapro, my blood pressure dropped like crazy! Hence, the xanax! It's helped ALOT, and I know I need to try breathing excercises, I HATE MEDS!!!!! I've just been through alot in the past 6 years, and they feel it's tied to post tramatic stress......but I've had tons of tests done, and like most here, I'm strong as an OX....a 104 lb ox....LOL! It's great to know, but I still feel c-r-a-z-y MOST of the time! SO thanks TO ALL!!!!! My biggest problem has been coming from a VERY Christian family, and I'm saved and know God's in control.....But my family is having a hard time accepting that this isn't something I can just pray about and it will go away! I do pray.....But I think I do need to learn more and find some info on excercises and breathing/ relaxing techniques! ANy one have a good book to suggest......THANKS AGAIN!!!!! And you guys have been one of my answers to my prayers. I'm NOT alone!

Hi Lucy,

I've been taking xanax for about 10 years due to PTSD/anxiety. I take 3 .5 tabs at bedtime and one .5 tab during the day. It helps so much.
