has anybody out there had pretty significant anxiety side effects from prilosec (omeprazole) or nexium? i started on omeprazole last week and my anxiety is SO much worse - i can't decide if it's because of the meds or because my heartburn really hasn't gone away at all. my doc wants to switch me to nexium, but if it is the med causing this horrible anxiety (i didn't sleep last night) i'm worried that nexium will be the same thing, as i understand they are chemically very similar. and nexium is so expensive, i don't want to be on it for 3 or 4 days only and have to throw the rest away if i feel the same way.

Im on AcipHex and Nexium because my anxiety wrecked my stomach. Stomach is better....and now on meds for anxiety. I dont think it is causing anxiety...maybe just the thought of taking them is giving u anxiety.

Hi..i was on prilosec for about 4 years and did great  and started having all kinds of acid reflux once again...My dr changed me to nexium 40 mgs and after a week or so i could tell a big difference....However it is expensive and no generic in it....Last year my insurance would not harldy cover it at all.....This year, it does but still 90.00 for 3 month supply.....Maybe your dr could give u a 2 week supply just to try it.....Like samples ??? ask for samples.....

I also have GERD and tried a few meds before trying Nexium. Then I tried Aciphex and the anxiety attacks were horrid! They also caused insomnia and restlessness. I start my new med tomorrow, Kapidex. I'm hoping the attacks will stop and I can sleep!

thanks for the responses - i just feel like my anxiety is SO much worse since i started the prilosec, i have picked up some samples of the nexium from my doctor (thanks for the suggestion, ILUVLUCY) but before i try them i think i am going to try zantac. i know it's not a ppi, and probably not as effective, but i'm pretty early into the acid reflux thing so i'm going to try it. i have a friend who is bipolar, who was diagnosed with acid reflux a while back, and zantac is working great for her. if i end up not using the nexium my doc said i can bring them back as long as they weren't opened.

more than anything, i'm like you, babygirl - i just want to get some sleep! my anxiety and insomnia have been ridiculous. shakehead

I take Nexium for Acid Reflux, and find it helpful. But at the same time, I find a big spoonful of liquid Gaviscon, from either the supermarket or pharmacy can really help as well and its cheaper and no need for a script!

Feel better,

I suffer anxiety/panic and GERD,
doctor prescribe omeprazole 20mg 2 times daily,
yes, it does increase anxiety and cause me dizziness that I quit omeprazole some time like 3 weeks,
and after a short period, my GERD becomes unbearable that I am on omeprazole again,
now, I can tolerate it fairly as I increase my anti-depressant and beta-blocker doze

I have had gerd for three years now.  I started out taking prevacid and had to quit taking it because my card wouldn't pay for it anymore.  Switched to prilosec and have taken this for about a year or two.  I now have panic attacks when my reflux is really horrible.  The prilosec does nothing for me.  I go see my gastro doctor in two weeks to see if he can give me something different.  My family doctor also told me that gerd can cause panic and anxiety attacks if it gets too bad.  Never knew that until he told me.
