Ok, I have a weird issue.  I have an aversion to toenails.  I hate toenail fungus commercials, etc.  So anyways, I just went on an 8 1/2 mile hike and my big toes kill from all the downhill hiking.  My friend, who is an avid hiker, told me there is a chance my toenails may come off, but he thinks they are just bruised.  Anyway, I'm in a lot of pain b/c I was too out of shape for the hike and now I am freaking out about the toenails.  I just wanted to vent here even though I'm sure nothing said here will really help - it just feels to get it out.  Lets just hope the pain is less tomorrow and the toenails just heal up!!!!!

I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night.  I take xanax prn for situational anxiety (aka no easy bathroom access).

Hi Fitzy,

Wow that was one heck of a hike. I remember as a kid running down mountain sides and my toes hurt after words. Its different when you hurt a foot. You can walk a little softer. But when its the toes it sure does make it a little harder to move around.

You're right there isn't much to be said that can be helpful. Just take it one day at a time. I hope the nail doesn't fall off. I've never lost one so I'm not sure how the process is.

Take it easy and let the healing process do its job. Maybe you will be lucky!!

Hugs

I would not worry about your toenails falling off from a hike even if it was a long one.  I am sure your feet are just bruised from the really long hike.  In all my years as a nurse I have never seen a case of someone losing their toenails from hiking.  I saw a lot of people slam their fingers or toes and lose a nail.  From hiking, never saw one person.

Thanks Kitt. My two friends that looked at it noticed a lot of bruising around the nail bed and it is swollen but I'm just limping around hoping for the best. Just breathing.
