I am in my 5th week of zoloft 50 ml. Feeling better but still get sever lows and anxiety
tried xanax last year without my parents knowing bcase they dissaprove
do u think that it is important for me to take xanax with zoloft as a part of my treatment ?
My mom researches alot and is against me taking xanax because she doesnt want me to rely on it as a crutch and get addicted and dependant on it
also she doesnt like the fact that it tranquilizes
what do u think ? is she right? or is it worth it ?
any input would be much appreciated
Thanks

I understand her fears as it can be addicting and is often abused but you need to talk to your Dr.  If your anxiety is really bad and Xanax makes you feel better and your Dr. does not have a problem prescribing and keeping a close eye on your intake, well it may be an option.  Anti Depressants never really helped my anxiety, in fact some made it worse, we all react differently to meds.  Right now I am on Buspar and it has cut my Xanax use in half.  It has been a good drug for me, very few side effects and the ones I did get initally went away within 2-3 weeks.  It is very wise to stay informed about meds but you need to listen to your Dr., especially if you feel they are really listening to you.

I hope this day is good one for you and that you find your correct med soon and will be feeling well.

I use Xanax myself for my anxiety. I only use it maybe 3-4 times a month at the most. If you aren't using it everyday, you will not become dependent on it. But if you are using it daily, then you definetly will. I think its important that you work with your therapist about what's best for YOU. You are the one who suffers with anxiety, not your Mom. So whatever you decide, it should be a decision between you and your doctor. JMHO

Im on Zoloft for 5 weeks also, but they upped me to 75mg. I do not sleep w/o xanax...i take .25mg. In the beginning weeks i was taking it morning and night...now, just night. I still have no appetite and lack of sleep doesnt help anxiety..so I take it. Maybe u should ask the doctor to up ur meds...
Its a long haul...and really stinks!

Good Morning,

I am sorry to hear you are not doing as well as you had hoped with your meds.

I am wondering if you have your own RX for Xanax or if you used someone else's med?  If you feel you want to talk with your Doctor about adding Xanax to your meds please do and listen to your Doctor re how to use this medication.

I would suggest ativan. It lasts longer and the memory loss is not as great. I found ativan to be not NEARLY as addictive as Xanax.

I am on Zoloft (150mg) and Xanax (4mg). I could not cope without this combo of meds. This has worked for me far better than any other meds I have tried. Ive been on this combo for nearly 7 years now and no complaints (except Zoloft made me fat!)

I hope you find some answers and some peace,

I wish! No, it doesnt at all. Im so used to being on a high dose that my body has adapted to it. I dont feel drowsy or sleepy or fuzzy at all. I know i should, but i dont. I take it at nightime, but it doesnt function as a sleep aid, it gives me less anxiety though which is great. It is a high dose, but ive been on it for 6-7 years and my pyschiatrist is happy for me to stay on it.

I wish you the best of luck, but I am concerned about your age and parental approval. Here in the states, a doctor has to work with the parents if you are not an adult concerning your medications. If you have serious concerns along with your mother about the addictiveness of Xanax, there is always another option with Buspar, which is non-habit forming, that might be a better fit. Maybe it is something you and your parents can discuss with your doctor.

Take care now :)

Thank you all for your replies and advice,
I feel I should clarify something.
When I tried Xanax I was in the states and i got an Rx from the health centre at my university
it was only for about 10 pills though and it was to help me sleep and to help me cope with my panick attacks untill I saw a psychiatrist.
Not to worry though, I am not self medicating and I am working with my psych and my mother, who is a bit skeptic yet supportive nonetheless
thank you for your concern and for sharing your experiences
Every little bit helps =)

I take Xanax myself and I do not have memory loss. I am not sure where that comment came from. I have been taking it for about 2 years now. IMO
