My "issue" has been going on for almost 6 months. It just happens randomly.  I can't pinpoint it to a food type.  It seems to happen more frequently when we are out in restaurants or eating at somones house.  I'm usually fine until the thought crosses my mind and then it's all over!  I actually feel like I'm going to choke.  The food feels like it's right in the middle of my throat and if I drink something to wash it down it sits up on top.  I've learned to excuse myself go to the restroom and make myself throw up.  The food is like right there in my throat, so throwing up is not difficult at all.  It doesn't matter what type of food I eat either.  It is really starting to affect my life negatively.  Obviously going out to dinners doesn't sound like fun when you think at some point in the night you're going to have excuse yourself to the ladies room to puke.  I went in to my dr. (before my medical insurance ran out ) and they did a barium swallow test and ddin't find anything abnormal.  I was a bulemic for about 10 years so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with or not.  I dont' know if its something in my head or if it's something physically wrong with me.....Any input would bre greatly appreciated.  Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Well, anxiety does cause difficulty swallowing but what you describe seems a little extreme to me. To clarify, though, you're not really throwing up? I mean the food is stuck in your throat...it never got to your stomach? Sometimes that happens when I take my pills but that's the only thing I have to compare it to and of course it's not exactly the same thing. Or if it is the effect of it isn't as bad as what you're having.

I don't know. Do you think a lot about this before you eat? If you're preoccupied with it maybe that makes it more likely to happen? Not sure. I would think this would warrant a visit with a doctor, but I know what having no insurance is like so it's hard for me to say "go to the doctor".

Hopefully someone here has been through something similar.

Hello and welcome to HealingWell and the A & P Forum. I am sorry to hear you are having anxiety issues re choking.

I would guess you have been in therapy in the past for your eating disorder, any chance you can see a therapist to talk about your fears?

I know other members will have input for you also. Again a warm welcome.
