Hello everyone,

I was wondering you guys can give me some advise on what I can do for my severe anxiety and panic attacks. I have Reverse Seasonal depression disorder, which they beleive is caused from having too much sun light. I take Cymbalta right now for 2 years, but I dont feel like it's doing too much at all for my anxirty/panic attacks. I cant take benzos cause I cant mix it with other medications I take as it can be a deadly mix so those are out of the question and also they have never helped in the past. I don't know what else is out their for anxiety. I don't want to stop the Cymbalta as it's done wonders for my migraines and fibro. Do you guys know if their's other medications out their for anxity/panic attacks, or maybe counseling? Has counseling helped anyone for anxity/panic issues? I just don't want to suffer another summer feeling like this, because I don't ever want to leave the house, and that isnt fair to my kids cause they wanna go places all the time, and I wanna be able to take them. I promised my daughter I would teach her how to swim this summer, but I cant leave the house if I feel like I'm gonna crawl out of my skin. Also we have plans for a week long vacation at the beach starting July 1st, and I want to be able to enjoy myself. I got myself a puppy to help with my depression and anxiety, and he has helped alot, but I really feel like I need something else.

I see my doctor in 2 weeks, and I wanna be able to ask him about ways to help my anxiety and panic attacks, so I thought maybe if you guys can give me some ideas, I can ask him about them. Thank you so much for listening.

Carmen,

Hello and welcome to the A & P Forum. I have both anxiety and depression. I would talk with your physician re adding a medication to your Cymbalta. I used to take Cymbalta but after almost 2 years I tried to go without an AD and made if for about a year and had a major melt down. I am now on Effexor which is working well for me and along with that I take Buspar.

BuSpar is an anti-anxiety medication that is not chemically or pharmacologically related to benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or other sedative/anxiolytic drugs.

Buspirone(Buspar) is commonly used to reduce fear, anxiety and tension associated with common anxiety disorders. It is useful as an augmenting agent as well, for treating depression when added to SSRI/SNRIs.

I also have a wonderful therapist who helps me really put things into perspective. I am very much a "what if" person which kicks me into anticipatory anxiety so we talk about ways to deal with this problem frequently.
Anticipatory anxiety is the anxiety one experiences before starting a challenging activity. Most often, anticipatory anxiety is a lot higher than what you actually end up experiencing.

Picturing positive outcomes can significantly reduce apprehension, which can lead to increased levels of confidence and an overall elevation in mood.

When you find yourself wondering, "What if..." Stop! Take a deep breath; breathe in through the nose, hold the air in your lungs for a count of four, then slowly let the air out through the mouth. While you are doing this, consider the possibility that you are being unrealistic and irrational. Focus on positive or neutral outcomes.

I find this truly helps me get past the anxiety.

Remember you have anxiety, anxiety does not have you.

Gentle Hugs,

Kitt
