I am not sure if this is a common question but does anyone else deal with awful pain and stiffness in the back and neck? What can be used to treat this? It is so bad sometimes that my jaw tightens up and pops. Are these common symptoms of panic/anxiety?

I guess it's not that common since no one else responded. I've been taking my medication but not as often as my doctor recommended and I notice the tension comes back after a few hours. I am going to try taking it as directed and see if I can eliminate some of this stiffness.

I get pain in my neck and upper shoulder area when I am really anxious. I know it is from the stress that I am feeling at the time. I use a heating pad to help ease the stiffiness and pain. Also I will have my husband massage my upper back to help with the knots I can feel in that area.

I will usually lay down and try to relax when the pain and tightness is really bad.

I hope this helps you.

Kindly,

Kitt

turn  H i,

I have had a stff neck in the past when I feel stressed. Its common that mental stress will  be held by a weak area in the body - i.e. upset stomach, neck, headache etc... I would get a stiff neck sometimes by anticipating one because it seemed to pop up when I  was stressed or anxious. Sometimes Im sure I imagined it was stiff when it wasn't and when I stopped focusing on it I forgot about it and there was no real issue. In my case I had a structural predisposition and at times of stress my body held the tension there. I dont really get them anymore. My advice: First of all dont worry about it - just go with it - like I said this is your bodies way of dealing with anxiety;Stretching your neck also helps while breathing deliberately in and out - turn your neck side to side and up and
down- feel the stretch for 5-10secs{if you have prominent pain i would see a doc and just rest]. But most of the time its nothing to really worry about and you
can do something about it! You also can shug your shoulders deliberately up and down which exercises the trapezius muscle whiich supports the neck and will help you avoid these problems- use light/no weights and do as many as you feel comfortable with. I dont know your health/fitness level but you can take out
a book or ask a certified fitness trainer about exercises if you are healthy. I speak from plenty of experience having bad neck issues and using the methods
I have mentioned. Another thing you can use is ice 20min on area when first stiff and 40 min off a couple of times - heat can be applied after a day or so.
Taking up a hobby to take your mind off the stress if you are able will help relax you and your neck. Good Luck.....

It's common for anyone that is feeling stressed. Sometimes I put a heating pad on my neck and shoulders and that makes it feel better. I also agree with stretching and being conscientious about how you hold yourself up. You are less likely to get pain if you are sitting up or standing up straight. Yoga helps a lot with posture.
