Me again!

I've recently had a new anxiety symptom (at least I'm pretty sure it is) where my hair is falling out!! I used to have thicker hair, years and years ago, in my late teens. But dying, sun, age, etc., causes it to thin/whatever. Anyway, in the last couple of weeks, I've noticed my hair coming out in .... I wouldn't say clumps, although a couple times it was clumps.... but when I wash my hair, several groups of strands come out. When I brush (and I brush carefully), I use a detangler and strand and strands come out as well! It freaks me out because I have never had this problem and it's enough hair that it's causing me to worry about it. Before it was just a few strands, but now it's a LOT. I don't have patches of bald spots or anything, but I'm worried I'm not going to have any hair left!

I had a thyroid test done about six months ago and it was fine. I'm not sure if they did a full panel. But I've had my thyroid levels be off before, but not enough to take medicine for it.

Anyone ever have this problem? I was just wondering if it was stupid to make a doctor's appointment for, but I don't want to lose my hair! It's way too hot out in the desert to wear a wig!! :)

Thanks!

Well I started to lose some hair when I started having anxiety problems. Luckily it sort of leveled off. I"m not sure if it was anxiety that caused it directly, because I wasn't eating at all back then.

Either way, I don't think it's silly to see a doctor about that. By all means, go.

I do go through stages where I don't eat, too. I get really low blood sugar, so I force myself to eat when I have to. Yesterday all day until 8pm I had a half a slice of leftover pizza. Then at 8pm I ate dinner at my parents' house after work. Today I got up this morning and it's now 3pm and I've only had a cup of decaf coffee and a lollipop! Maybe that is my problem!

I'll still ask my doctor, because there are times I totally pig out and the hair still comes out.

Thanks so much!

Yeah if that's a normal pattern for you, make sure you tell your doctor about it. I don't think anxiety alone can make your hair fall out. It made me sick at my stomach which caused me not to eat/eat poorly, which caused some of my hair to fall out. We need our nutrients.

Look up "super food" on the internet if you have a lifestyle like mine in which it's difficult to sit down for meals. I felt a lot better after I started using it, and would recommend it to anyone whether they have anxiety or not.

When the body and our health is negatively affected (trauma, pregnancy, emotional stress, major illness) your hair no longer has priority for your health maintenance.  Severe mental stress can have this affect as your body and mind tries to deal with your emotional issues. This process, known as telogen effluvium, occurs when more hairs go into a "resting phase" and are shed.

I am not sure this is what is happening with you but I agree that discussing it with your Doctor would be a good idea. The good news is that stress related hair loss  is temporary.

Whew, thanks all. Every time I see it on my clothes, in the shower, on the floor to be swept up, it worries me. I don't need ANOTHER thing to worry about, for sure! I made an appointment for Thursday.

Thanks and love you all! <3
