In one word..yes. I dealt with this for a while. The less anxiety you have, the lest chest pains you will have. Worrying about it will only make it worse. You will not die. The doctors are there to help you. Stray strong and good luck!

drake,

I had heartburn for years and what worked for me was using antacids.  Antacids may be taken after meals, at bedtime, or when needed, to bind excess acid in the stomach and to coat the esophagus. Have you tried antacids to see if you heartburn goes away using this simple remedy ?

Anxiety can  trigger symptoms as diverse as panic, constipation or even heartburn. smhair   Work on lowering your anxiety level and I suspect your heartburn will decrease.

Kindly,
Kitt

Drake,

From my experiences of having anxiety, heartburn is definitely something that occurs. I get that most of the time, same with bowl movement issues. I also find myself going to the toilet more often when my anxiety is up. Maybe staying away from greasy and spicy foods will help you some? That has always helped me. Like Kitt said, trying an antacid will help as well. :)

Best of luck!

I have this sometimes and I just take antacids...but I'm wondering if something like Prilosec OTC (Acid reflux med) might help more. I use to be on Prilosec years ago and it was a good med. Definitely talk to your doctor.

I actually use chewable fruit flavored rolaids if I am just having heartburn and then I always cut down on the diet coke and coffee as I know they contribute to my heartburn as well as my GERD.

I started on Prilosec about 9 years ago and this med has served me well although I still have occasional heartburn.  Prior to the Prilosec I had daily heartburn and never went anywhere with out my rolaids.

drake,

Sorry for the delay in response to your question however I am guessing we are in different countries and due to the time difference you posted at 3:00 AM my time.  :-)

Ompranyt is the same as omeprazole  = Prilosec here in the USA.  20 mg is the dose I take and I already stated in above post that this medication works well for me.

If you really want to talk with people with GERD re what helps them do post in the GERD forum as there is a ton of info in that forum on all the different treatments for GERD/Heartburn.

drake,

Your Dr. is right and that is the answer you will get most often from Drs. and members.  Have faith that the medication will work.

Any further questions re heartburn/GERD medications please post in the GERD/Heartburn forum.

Are you still taking the Ompranyt? If so, I am taking it that it did not work?

Have you tried breathing and relaxation exercises, and if so did they have any effect? Have you been offered a therapy referral from any of your doctors? If not, I would pursue this as my next step.

Seeing as how you have checked out physically, then your next logical move woud be to do everything you can to treat the anxiety...then if you are still having the issue, you could go back and get re-evaluated medically...but you may not have a need to do so...:)

Well wishes and support!

I am going through the exact same thing you are and I have been for he last 7 months. In the beginning it scared the crap out of me. Actually it still does because I get heart palpitations, but my doctor put me on Prozac for the anxiety and it did wonders and I have been taking the omeprazol and it helps wonderfully with the heartburn and for the occasional extra boost needed for heartburn I use Gaviscon. If you can get your doctor to put you on an anti depressant or an anti anxiety medication, the pain in your chest, arms, neck, back and legs will go away, your shortness of breath will go away, the heart burn will ease up a little so that it is manageable by the heartburn meds and you can begin to fell like a human again.

I hope this helps. smilewinkgrin

I am having issues with heartburn right now! I don't get it much and I generally don't get heartburn from anxiety. I just made an appt with my doc because I've been having constant heartburn for a few days and it's not letting up. It doesn't seem to coincide with when I eat and I've been eating bland stuff. I'm sure my anxiety didn't help things because I started to have a full blown panic attack after being stupid and symptom surfing. Today I came to my senses and decided to just call the darn doctor and see what he thinks! I hope you are doing better :-).

Hi paniccu,

Good to hear from you again...although I am sorry to hear about your stomach issues.:(

A/P can do a number on our digestive sysytems. Stress causes stomach acid to rise, so what/whether you have eaten or not, may not change the tendency towards heartburn much.

Good job on calling your doctor. Let us know how your appointment goes okay?

I have suffered (and still do) a similar condition. I am not sure if Gerd has caused my anxiety or if anxiety has caused my Gerd. I work a stress full job and it tends to be worse during the week (although still there on the weekend) I have lost 65 lbs in 4 months, thinking that changing to bland diet would help (it hasn't). I have had ultrasound, endoscopy and ekg done all came back clean. Only thing was slightly low thyroid which my Dr doesnt believe warrants any treatment. As for treatment I am currently on 80mg of Pepcid daily and librax 3 times a day, and xanax when needed. I cannot tolerate any of the PPI acid reducers (nexium, prilosec, aciphex, protonix) etc, they all give me a strange reaction such as nausea and dizziness. I've tried all of them.
Interestingly I never wake up in the night with heartburn and it always builds up throughout the day, to the point that it is so painful that i get panic attacks because i think i'm having a heart attack. Xanax will usually relieve the attack and the heartburn but only temporarily. The librax calms your GI down and with the pepcid does help. Usually it get somewhat manageble for a few weeks and then it will come back very bad for a few weeks. It has gotten me to the point where i cannot function at my job and many times i need to work from home. I recently tried Lexapro at the advice of my Dr to help with the anxiety but stopped it because it made me feel wired with adrenaline, i possibly didnt give it long enough to take effect and body to get used to it but i could not go to work with those side effects. I may try it again when i have a couple weeks off from work.
Sometimes the acid will cause extreme gas buildup in upper GI and radiate severe pain into my back. The past two weeks i have not gone a day without having severe heartburn. Its strange because i used to be able to consume anything, in terms of food and work crazy hours, drinks after work never a problem but this problem has seriously brought me to a complete standstill. If anyone has advice i would appreciate it

Hi 92cpe and welcome.

We do have some great self-help anxiety reducers in our Resources here. You may want to include those in your everyday practices, and see if lower stress=less GERD symptoms for you. There does seem to be a definite correlation between anxiety and increased stomach acid...so if you can do the breathing, progessive muscle relaxation and meditation on a daily basis, it could help.

I also recommend checking in with our GERD forum if you haven't already...you will get great input there as well.

I am sorry that you are going through this. I hope that you see some improvement soon, start feeling better and gaining some weight back.

Post with us anytime.
