I decided to do something a little different/creative. This thread is not for the "text book" definitions of anxiety but perhaps a more "graphic" explination sort of so everyone who doesnt have it can get some kind of inkling what its like.

Here is mine for an example...

Anxiety is like being on a seesaw on the playground and a bully comes up and pushes the other end down holding you suspended in the air. You are more or less in the control of the bully. The longer you are frantic the longer he will keep you suspended. You have two choices "jump and run" or stay and panic till he decides to let you down but be careful it might not be gently.

You know that famous painting called "The Scream" - it was stolen a while back. That sums it up perfectly for me.

anxiety for me is absolute frustration at being trapped by something that many believe does not really exist, there is no clear cut diagnosis..no blood test ect.......mean while there are people all over this world suffering greatly from things like genocide, starvation, disease, war ect ect ect.......and here i am, i have none of these problems in my sheltered spoiled life and i cant control my own mind from driving me crazy with grief about things that pale in comparison to "real" problems.....it makes me feel like the weakest person on the face of the earth...it def crushes my self confidence and diminishes my potential greatly...........................................................................................................................and don't try to talk to anyone about it b/c they sure as hell don't want to hear about how weak and pathetic u are for allegedly suffering from a mental illness that they don't beleive really exists.....everything associated with the condition, from the symptoms to the social implications and taboo nature of it, is truly a life altering experience that only the affected can begin to explain or sympathize for............i slept 3 hrs last night and i'm not even tired, what the hell is wrong with me? Sry i'm ranting again.....later

kinda like being trapped in a steamy sauna and you can't get out of it . It starts to drive you crazy...

I have to agree with you too Ez. I'm tired of being treated like we are stress-cases that can't handle pressures of life. I tried to explain to someone last night about panic disorder and i think he understood.

When we get a symptom like shortness of breath, it can't be just shortness of breath. It's gotta be either lung cancer or pneumonia. If we get a headache, it can't be just  a headache. It's gotta be a brain tumor. If we get chest pain, it can't just be heartburn. it's gotta be a heart attack. If we get a stomach ache, it can't be reflux, it's gotta be stomach cancer etc.

Do you know why I think we believe this? Because our symptoms FEEL more intense, more than just an average stomach ache, shortness of breath, headache or chest pain. our symptoms FEEL magnified by 100. Every little sensation that I have in my body, even just an itch, tingle or ache, is more intense than before i was diagnosed.

I firmly believe something in our body chemistry has changed. I believe there is a biological cause that isn't clear yet, more than just effecting the brain. i think that there will be a test someday.

I would also love to get together with other PD sufferers and call attention to the NAME "PANIC DISORDER". The name needs to be changed.  I think the world does view us a weak, nervous, and afraid of the world just by the name alone and that is not the case! We're thrown into a category of "anxiety sufferers" like we're all just nervous and anxious all day for no reason or have some social phobia. I think many of us are nervous and anxious ONLY because we have physical symptoms that hurt and we are afraid of being somewhere that might make it worse (like being somewhere that we can't go and lie down and take a break). The name has a stigma of "crazy" or "mentally ill" attached. I think if anyone that I knew could spend 5 minutes in my body, they would be at the ER, and finally understand this "disease"!

For me anxiety and panic is like being in a whole seperate world than everybody else. I get up and function the best I can but no around me knows that even though I'm physically here my mind never stops racing. I can have a complete conversation with someone and not really  be there because I'm constantly worried. That's the best way I can describe, it's like living in a whole other reality.

thease are so grate...i feel like we should get togther and start and awareness campaign.....we could all be on t.v. lol

I started my anxiety as a very young child, i think there are a lot of children with such disorders, it's just harder to tell. I frist described it to my mother as "the worry monster" a discription i mentaly refrence regularly

and i quote a seven year old me "the worry monster lives under my pillow, every night it comes up and it tries to drill holes in my head. It bores holes in the back of my scull and it reaches inside of my head and it hurts me."

Anxiety is like.......having a heartattack right in front of people and theres nothing you can do about it, but youre scared you will just fall down with ppl around you, and you try to run, but the more you run, the more people there are and the faster your heart goes til you cant breath and you think its going to explode. Fear takes over, eats you up and spits you out when it gets ready to, then i can breath again.

Anxiety is like being normal then SNAP you go into safe mode, you cant breath, you cant talk, your fear is taking over and you have no idea what to do but your so scared you want to hide. People around you have no idea whats going on in your mind but you do, and your face turns red and your heart beats so hard, and you have to pull yourself up and out, and try so hard to look normal, but youre not sure if you do, someone may find out and think you have lost your mind. (this happens at work) but eventually, seems like forever, you realize its subsiding and youve made it, and you can look someone in the eye again.

Im not good at explaining, but this is a great thread, these are very good visuals.
" Dwell not on the past. Use it to illustrate a point, then leave it behind. Nothing really matters except what you do now, in this instant of time. From this moment onward you can be an entirely different person, filled with love and understanding, ready with an outstretched hand, uplifted and positive in every thought and deed."
Eileen Caddy
