Hi everyone, I'm going through some extreme depression with extreme anxiety.  I wake up in the morning and immediately feel anxiety.  I feel like my heart is being squeezed and I can't stop the racing thoughts and I can't eat, which is new for me because I usually have depression and all I want to do is eat.  I had a PCP who prescribed me xanax as needed.  My next doc did too.  I never abused it.  Then, I went to my PCP to discuss my disability paperwork and told him how awful things were and that I thought about ending it all.  I guess that got documented because he left the practice (shortly thereafter) and the doc who took his place would not refill my xanax. He knew that I was under a psyche care and said for them to do it.  Well, she told me that she does NOT prescribe benzoidiapines (sp?).  I was in a MAJOR DEPRESSION - almost checking myself into a hospital and she is prescribing me new anti-depressants till we find the right one/combo and anti-mania drugs for the anxiety.  I do not have bi-polar and these drugs are not the same as xanax.  I had horrible side effects with them -- zombie with glassy eyes and tiny pupils. Has anyone experienced this?  What do I do w/o looking like a drug seeker.  This makes me so mad because I am suffering so bad and need help.
Thanks.

I wish you all the best and I am sure others will be along to post and give their input as well

Hi Lyn. Thank you for your response. I guess I was a fool to be so honest and transparent with my doctor. I needed more help but it turned out to be counterproductive. I've been off of the xanax for about 3 months. Any human being who hears what I've been through and am going through should have compassion and prescribe me the xanax. I'm really dissapointed. It seems like most on here have no problem getting whatever meds they need. I think I just scared them or something.

Xanax is for anxiety/panic not depression. If you are unhappy with your doctor I would find a new one. I think you should always be honest about how you feel with your doctor. From my experience the hospital would just prescribe anti-depressants also. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Hopeful,
I'd go to another doctor for sure! There ARE docs that will prescribe xanax or other benzos. You don't have to tell the other doc that the last one refused. I believe in giving docs all the info they need, but am also careful not to give them more than necessary! Too many times they just hear "selectively" I have found! Take care and keep us posted!

My doc was slightly hesitant to prescribe me the Ativan but I just couldn't calm down.  She now wants me to get off of it and take "as needed" because she doesn't want me to get hooked on it.

But for me, I "need" it a lot, and so I go through a bottle in just a couple weeks from feeling anxious all the time.

I would say try a different doc maybe?  Explain what YOU need and explain that you want something so that you can calm down when you are experiencing the panicky feelings.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. When one hits the bottom, I think they need the medicine! The problem is the docs might think I'm going to kill myself. The thing is without the mes I might just do it so it's a double edged sword. I suffer with GAD. I think it's more cognitive in that I am a perfectionist and a professional worrier. Right now I am under so much stress I can hardly breathe. I called this morning to my GP and told them I needed to come in as an emergency. They told me to go to the hospital. I convinced my doc I needed xanax for anxiety not a trip to the ER. He is going to refill my ooooold RX (hopefully today) and see me next Tuesday. Why does my psyche doc prescribe those anit-mania drugs? I don't see anybody else taking those who have anxiety. People with bi-polar take those and I am not bi-polar.

Find another doctor. That would be my suggestion. It may be tough as there are not many doctors who do prescribe the benzos anymore. But it is true they may see you as a risk for taking the xanax as your depression was so severe. Xanax is not good for depression. One thing that may help you somewhat with your anxiety until you get help is dramamine (less drowsy formula). I am weaning myself off of xanax and I supplement with the dramamine. It really has helped quite a bit during bad panic times. Also Valerian(an otc herb) helps tremendously for sleep. Hope this helps. I will be praying for you. Let us know how you're getting along. panicinID

Thank you. I never would have thought of dramamine. The otc kind or RX? I would like to try it. I've tried Valarian and I wish it helped me sleep. I'm a hard case when it comes to sleep - I've tried everything. Soma seems to help when I need it. Also, I seem resistant to the different preventatives for migraine too. I wonder why this is. Thank you so much for your support and especially for your prayers. I know that God wants me to stay here that's why I'm here.
