I know this is totally off topic, but my anxiety is OUT of control!!! I'm really losing it here! My 5 year old granddaughter (who lives with us) started kindergarten 9 weeks ago (just got her 1st report card and is doing well). They started sending homework about the 3rd week of school. It was pretty easy to get her to do all of it until now. They had a full week to do 4 book "reports" where they draw their favorite part of the books that were read to them that week (they originally asked us to read them one book per night, which seemed fine), one "math" page per week... counting things in the house, such as forks and spoons, and one page where you cut pics out of magazines of words that start with the letter of the week, then they have to use "brave writing" to try to spell the word. Well, we barely were getting her to finish up all of it by due day of Wednesday. Keep in mind, none of this is work that can be done by the child without help from an adult...

Now, they aren't sending it home until Fridays, and they are asking us to read 4 books a day, having her do SIX book reports, 2 math papers, and 2 "first letter" papers, and a handwriting page, all due by Wednesday. I almost passed out when I opened her homework folder. We have been "working" on this for about 2-1/2 hours, and we are not even close to halfway done. My hubby took her to the store with him before I totally flipped. If things weren't bad enough, she spends about half her time at her dad's house. He was all "gung-ho" in the beginning helping her, reading to her, and helping her with the book reports, math pages, etc. when it was "his week". The last time he sent her home he hadn't helped her do ANYYHING, and hadn't read any books to add to the reading log. So she went back to school the next day, and got a big (?) on her papers that weren't completed. This is HIS weekend, and he is allowing us to take her to a family party tomorrow, in return for getting to keep her until next Thursday. Soooooooo, her homework will be due while he has her, and she still has 6 book reports and a math page left to do. We ALL work, so she goes to after-school care until about 5PM each day, and has to go to bed early to get up at 6am.

Is it just me?????? or are these people crazy????????? She's five.... I just don't get it. This is kindergarten. UGH!

By the way, this is not helping my anxiety.. LOL!

Well sis your opinion is right on IMO
There is way to much emphasis on learning in younger grades now and not enough on play and interaction
luvs ya

Thank you for replying Wednesday and Lyn,

I totally agree, which is why I was having such an anxiety attack over this earlier! When my granddaughter came back from the store, I had put the homework away, I felt enough was enough. We absolutely love reading time, as we always have (although we are not going to do 4 books a night, she falls asleep usually after 1 or 2 lol). When my kids were in kinder, all they did was color, play and learn phonics, and started reading towards the end of the year (and in those days kinder was only half a day). As the teacher told us in orientation.... things have changed! This is regular public school, not some fancy academy or something.... but the "emphasis is on learning to read", and by the end of kinder, if they are not able to read at a certain level, they are held back. I suppose that her 2 years in day care prepared her well (which was strictly out of necessity, as we all have to work) and she is already reading above kinder level because she picked up reading very young (we can't even spell secrets around her anymore...I miss that!)... some kids just pick that up, but it is so not fair to pressure the little ones anyway. The teacher had told me at the beginning of the year that she shouldn't feel burdened by the homework, and not to worry too much about it, but then starts sending home more and more, and puts a scolding little (?) on her unfinished papers. Don't get me wrong, they try to make the activities in the homework fun... but once the little one is tired from a long day already, more writing practice and book reports sometimes feel like a bit too much. I'm glad you both agreed that they are overdoing this a bit.... I wasn't sure if I was crazy. What ever happened to naptime and juice breaks??? Poor baby, and I guess first grade is going to be worse...

After I wrote earlier, her daddy called and told her that her doggie over there died, and she was so upset. I had quite a time trying to calm her down and get her to bed. I am so afraid she is going to end up a nervous wreck someday like her Nana....... oh my, what a start to the "weekend"!!!

Thanks for letting me vent! Luv ya,

Bear

I agree with Weds. Maybe you could talk to some of the other parents. It seems to me like many of the kids might be having the same issues. If that's the case, schedule a time when you could talk to the teacher. If she's unaware that her students are being given too much homework, things aren't going to change.

I have to tell you, I wish my grandparents were as involved as you are. Sounds to me like you're the bestest GrandBear ever!
