Ok, the subject has come up a couple times tonight and has me wondering (or should I say worrying!).  Do SSRIs tend to stop working (for no apparent reason) after long-term use??  I'm on Paxil for about 10 years...  Also, has anyone had experience with generic versions not working as well?  I look forward to hearing your opinions/experiences!

Hi, Karen!
Yes, they can. I was on Zoloft for about 12 years and then my anxiety started coming back big time. I was switched to Paxil CR at 25mg on 10/12/06 and it seems to have started working for me in the last few days! YAY! Before going on 25mg of Paxil, they had me take half my regular dosage of Zoloft with 12.5mg of paxil, so they can wean you off of one SSRI while piggybacking another one. It has been okay for me and it likely will for you, should yours ever stop working. However, not everyone has SSRI "poop-out"! So don't stress over it. Just enjoy your feeling okay and cross the "switching SSRI" bridge when and.if you come to it! ;)

My sister was on Paxil for 8 years and it stopped working for her, so she had to switch to Lexapro. She's considering switching back though because the Lexapro isn't working for her.

Hi yes I believe they will eventually stop working
generic meds are made with cheaper versions of  chemicals  as so the cost is kept down but I find there are way to many generic meds I cannot take
here in Canada a paper is signed by doc for NO SUBSTITUTE and this forces pharmacies to give you name brand meds at basically same cost or almost
I think you may have to be switched to something else hun
Know we are all with you in this okay

Keep us posted and all the best to you

Hi,
I have been switched on and off various meds (Paxil, Paxil CR, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor, Ativan) and I have definately noticed that some stop working over time. I had that problem with Paxil CR which I was on for the longest amount of time. A while ago I was reading an article (sorry I don't remember where) that said with certain SSRI's (such as Paxil), if you miss a dose it will never work the same for you again. I don't know how much truth is in that but it makes sense. I ran out of my meds and missed one day of it and even though it was only one pill it never worked quite as well as it did before that. I don't know if this helps but the only thing I could really do was switch to another med after that.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone. After going thru two meds that did not work, once Paxil "fixed" me, I figured I'd be set for life!! I hate the thought that I may have to go thru that trial and error period again.... Guess its just wait and see!
