I hate to ask people for support, but it's become very clear to me that I not only don't like to take pills, I am AFRAID to take them.

My doctor prescribed a new drug for me the other day (Nortriptylene/Aventyl/Pamelor) and I have yet to take it. The doctor told me to and that should be enough for me, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I guess I need encouragement.

It's weird. In my mind I know that it's unlikely to make me throw up. And I know that the last time I threw up it wasn't nearly as bad as I was anticipating. And I also know that getting sick from a little pill can't possibly make me sick for more than a couple hours (right?). Even though I know these things, logic and rational thought takes a back seat.

Hi there debaser...
Pills are scary beasts i know...but, obviously you have been feeling pretty ghastly up until now - so, your doc has prescribed these pills to relieve 'icky' symptoms, so why not give it a go..could you feel any worse by taking them compared with life without them?
Be brave...you have a chance for a better quality of life.
I can remember feeling like that about taking particular pills, so I got out of bed really early one morning - took the dratted things..and went back to bed to see what would happen..figured I couldn't fall down coz I was already lying down lol...
Still here to tell the tale and feeling a lot better thank goodness!
Good luck.. I look forward to reading how you got on.

your med is a tricyclic antidepressant, prescribed for many different things at different doses, start with a small dose before bed. all anxiety sufferers do seem more likely than average to have strong reactions to starting antidepressants, but the reaction sadly cant be predicted

some have a fear of swallowing tablets but are OK taking liquid versions or can grind the tablet into a powder and mix with food

I think it can be a healthy reaction to be afraid of pills. Sometimes we have to listen to what are bodies are telling us.

Some medication should not be broken or crushed. Be sure to ask your pharmicist about this before you do it. Are you discussing this problem with your doctor? Maybe they could talk to you about how important it is to take the medication.

Bluemeanies,

I think I pissed my doctor off when I last saw him. I was pretty incredulous when he suggested that my stomach problems may be panic attacks, and it probably didn't help that I was his last appointment of the day. I'm taking another couple of tests for him but I don't think I'm supposed to see him again unless they happen to show something. He doesn't anticipate that they will and has referred me back to the doctor of internal medicine that I saw when I first went to the hospital.

In short, I don't want to trouble him any more. I do know it's important to take them...I just keep thinking of reasons not to. Maybe I'll look into splitting it.

Hi debaser,

I understand fully what it is that you are going through as i have the same problem that you do...I believe that it could be a phobia,in my case i first started being afraid of taking new tablets when i started suffering with panic attacks, anxiety and my doctors where trying me on different medications to see which one would work and i had a couple of allergic reactions to them... So i guess that that is why i fear taking new and different medications to what im used to... My doctor only yesterday gave me a new medication to take and as of yet i havent taken them... Dont think i will either...I suppose all you can do is try to take them and see what happens,i guess that is the only way you will find out if they are going to help or not...  I know that this will not help you, i just wanted you to know that you are not alone when it comes to taking new tablets... Fear produces alot of reactions,it is getting past the fear and just doing it anyway...

          Honeypie...

3.No,because i have something better for you...
