Just wanted this cleared up.

Someone told me that if you HV for a long time and don't do the paper bag thing (or similar; using sleeve , hands or whatever) then your body thinks it's getting too much oxygen and stops you from breathing and you die.

So I suppose I want someone who's up on this subject to tell me it's not true.

WhenI last HV'd my face , hands and arms , feet and legs went numb and tingled then my hands and wrists felt like they were cramping - my fingers went real staight and then bent inwards towards the inside of my wrists and I couldn't even force them back. I did slow breathing until it went away but I didn't use a bag. Aftewards I was tearful and shakey and pretty worn out.

Are there any other symptoms that I could get as I would like to know so that I don't panic about them and think there's something wrong with me.

Cheers

I have never heard of such a thing.  I have been a chronic hyperventilator since grade school and I'm now 46 and still kicking, but I'd difer to a professional.

the way for anxiety sufferers to avoid HV is to breathe deep and slow, also hold the breath a while if you feel the urge to HV
it cant kill you but can make you pass out so at worst you go thru a cycle of HV, fainting, recovering, more HV and more fainting
HV can become a bad habit and addictive, some enjoy the sensations it causes to them
lots of info about it on the net

I have heard of these symptoms..I have a girlfriend who HV'd on an airflight of the horrendous variety - and her fingers turned in just like yours did...she thought she was having a stroke but no - just extreme HV. She has lived to tell the tale :)
The upside to your story is that you took control and handled it..wow..well done!

Thanks guys.

I have passed out before but have never attributed that to A/P because it was a totally different feeling ; I would get a hot flush , feel drowsy and my legs would be leaden - not tingley or wobbly - if you've had an epidural I would say legs felt like that. I then pass out and everythings black , I come to again and then I'm fine . Strange thing though - I've never worried about it and also it's never happened in a "theatening" environment/situation.

I was making BFs lunch for work the other week and the feeling started to happen so I whipped off my jumper , shoes and socks to cool me down and got a chair to sit on so I wasn't so far from the floor when I fainted.........I carried on making the lunch........then nothing happened??.......thats only the second time I've felt that way and not fainted.

When I was 12/13 years old my friends and I used to get amusement out of bending over and HVing then standing against the wall and someone would push on your chest and you'd faint.

I used to HV a lot when I was getting beaten by my ex aswell but I never passed out even though I obviously couldn't do the slow breathing - suppose I knew I had to stay alert , it's the old fight or flight thing I guess.

Thanks again guys tongue ..........and any ideas if the other fainting thing I get is A/P - as I say it never happens when I'm stressed but I know ppl have P/A without cause confused

Hey smiler..........
I dont know what this is about but yes I get like that or I have in the past a few times legs ...I use to tell mom "I am losing my legs" would have to grab a chair as quick as possible and just sit it out I neverr fainted thru them though just went totally tingly every where. For me I think it is the A/P doing it and poor circulation:also the faiting I think that is to do with A/P IMO I have heard of others doing it ....w/o cause .....
Hope you feel better hun kk
