i have a friend, and she gets panic attacks often, since she's claustrophobic and some stupid people decide to jump on the elevator while its moving. it freaks her out alot. some other things contribute to panic attacks, such as getting in trouble at school.
when she has a panic attack, what can i do to comfort her?

thanks!! :-)

The only thing I can think of is just being there or helping her get to a quiet spot till it passes.

What would be MUCH more helpful is to convince her to go to a therapist where she can learn how to cope, minimize or even eliminate the attacks.

You have gotten some good suggestions here. In addition have you asked your friend how you can help her? Some A/P people cope differently...some need space....some need close support. I also condone the suggestions the others have given.

Hello phobiagrl823

You are a good friend to be so concerned and supportive to your friend. I do have a couple of questions I would like to ask you.

Does her parents know she is suffering with these panic attacks?

Do you think you could get your friend to come here and talk with us?

There are a lot of members here that are going thru the same thing she is that maybe they can help and talk to her. I do agree with the others she does need to see a professional about this. Just be there for her and do what you can and please keep us updated on how shes doing.

If she doesn't already, tell her to practice deep breathing. She should take deep slow breaths in through her nose , hold it and then release it out her mouth or nose. This will help her to stop hyperventilating. Just having a supportive friend is worth a lot too. It's really frustrating when people don't take you seriously. Panic attacks can feel very scary.

i'm pretty sure her parents know, since she said that she shakes alot normally and they know this.
as for the professional help, i'd very much like to convince her to get it... she has problems more than the panic attacks [ill just say that she needs birth control...] [[shes 14]]

but as for the panic attacks, she always says that it helps to have human contact when she gets them. so whenever me and our friends see her shaking and breathing fast, we all hug her and such.

thanks bunches for the great help!!
always feel free to email/contact me. if you need me, i'll be here. :)

my favorite thing in the world [besides huggs] is helping poeple.

This is just my Opinon. I may not be right I may not even be on the same planet:

But at her age and Dating a bit much is ussally a cry for atention. She need somone to give her attention to make her feel loved or cared for Most of the the people I have known with panic attacks ( not all just the ones I have known ) ussally like alittle space to breath or want someone to hold thier hand not a bunch of people to grab and hug them. Again I am not saying she is not having a painc attack but it might be another cry out for attention. Also you said she is claustrophobic, The only claustrophobic I know is my sister and she hates a bunch of people to crowd her.
I Myself was a teen mother and I have been working with teens girls and teen moms for 5years and just from how it sounds I would suggest she talk with a youth counselor about being to adult with her dating, if she is not comfortable talking with her parents. Let her know she needs to go to a doctor to make sure these are panic attacks, If they are then they can help her. I really hope all works out. You are a great friend to try to help her out!!! Invite her to come online and talk with us!
Good luck,
Crying

Oh phobiagrl823 she is so young. I'm so thankful she has a friend like you to help watch over her. You said she is 14 so I'm assuming you around the same age. Please please don't get so wraped up that you forget to take care of yourself. Your a great friend and this is a lot for both of you to have to deal with. I am praying for both of you to be safe. If you ever need to email me my email address is listed in my profile under members. God Bless the both of you.
