Hi, I was taking Effexor XR 150 mg for about 6-7 years. A little over a month ago I started weaning myself off of it with my doctors approval. I took 112.5mg for 2 weeks, 75mg for 2 weeks, then 37.5 for 2 weeks. I had several side effects each time I stepped down but they were tolerable for the most part. I think my biggest complaint would be the brain shivers and stomach problems. Then finally, the 2nd day after no medication all heck broke loose. I wanted to cry at the drop of a hat, my stomach was and still is upset, and my mood has been horrible. It has been one week medication free and I will snap at anything. I have zero patience and just can not stand it. Anything and everything is making me mad and it seems like everything is going wrong. Im sure there are several other people out there that have had the same problems, anyone have any suggestions???

hi lucky me and welcome to hw. Im so sorry that you are having to deal with all this...sounds horrible. What does your doc say about all the symptoms? They sound fairly normal for weaining off something, but it does sound so rough. It takes ALOT of hard work and patience to come off these types of things, kudos to you, and hang in there....we are all behind you. Keep posting, that helps ;)

Hi, I have not talked to my doctor recently.  This is probably the 3rd time I have tried to come off of the medication.  I knew what the problems were going to be coming off it, but when I stopped taking it all together I didn't know what to do.  The 2nd day without medication I ended up having to leave work early sick because I couldn't stand it.  And like I said my biggest complaint has to be my mood.  I will snap at the drop of a hat.  Any idea how long it is going to take for this to go away.  I've heard people say they still feel the effects a year later.  The 2nd day I was about to go back on the medication, but I hung in there because I know that I do not need to be on it any longer.  (or so I think)

Hi - I am on Effexor too - but only 75 mg daily.  I have been on it about a year and intend to stay on it forever!  I think if you have been on Effexor for six to seven years, it is going to take a while for your body to adjust to being without it.  In my very humble opinion, I think your two weeks, two weeks, two weeks withdrawal was very quick to come off this powerful drug.  It may be helpful to go back onto 37.5 mg for a little while but if that means you have to go through what you have already gone through, you may prefer to stick it out.  I have read that taking Prozac for the last bit of withdrawal can help enormously.

I have great admiration for what you have achieved so far.  HW will help you through the bad times too.  Take care.

Hi Jan,

The 2 week thing was my doctors orders. I'm going to give it a shot without it, my doctor did prescribe Xanax, but I have not taken any. It has been a very tough road. What makes me so upset is that when my doctor first prescribed the Effexor, he never said anything about this. But I do admit if I hadn't gone on it, I wouldn't be where I am today. I do think it helped a ton. I had anxiety so bad I didn't want to leave the house. Thanks for your reply...
