I was wondering about Splenda, the sweetner that actually tastes like real sugar. There is controversy about it, as there is also with aspartame. I mainly have a little Splenda in my sugar-free ice cream. I don't drink beverages with it anymore. On one site, I found the info I've enclosed here. However, everyone is different and I'm not saying that the info provided at the site is unbiased...I truly don't know. Nonetheless, it never hurts to be aware of potential triggers for us anxiety sufferers, so I thought I'd bring this to your attention.

Wow Janet-

That's quite a list of side effcts. Looking at my Diet Coke can, I see aspertame but no splenda. Do you know if it has it in it? Maybe that's why I'm the way I am. Who knows. I'll try to avoid it.

My girlfriend swears by it. But I knew there had to be side effects as with anything else that is treated. I kept telling her it wasn't good for you. But we all do things that aren't in our best interest. I know I do. Guilty.

Thanks for sharing though.

recently, i noticed a very strange reaction to diet coke. i hadn't ever heard of aspertame before this, but i ordered a regular coke from a fast food restaurant and they accidently gave me a diet coke instead. i took a big drink of it and got an immediate anxiety attack, couldn't swallow, short of breath, my mouth went really dry. i didn't know if it was an allergic reaction or sensitivity, but i talked to a few people about the difference from regular coke to diet and they said it was probably the aspertame.

Aspartame can be really bad too! See info I've included. I do believe there's something to be said about these artificial sweetners being possibly dangerous, as I've done Google searches and found numerous studies about them. Just be careful!

Aspartame Side Effects
The components of aspartame can lead to a number of health problems, as you have read. Side effects can occur gradually, can be immediate, or can be acute reactions. According to Lendon Smith, M.D. there is an enormous population suffering from side effects associated with aspartame, yet have no idea why drugs, supplements and herbs don’t relieve their symptoms. Then, there are users who don’t ‘appear’ to suffer immediate reactions at all. Even these individuals are susceptible to the long-term damage caused by excitatory amino acids, phenylalanine, methanol, and DKP.

Adverse reactions and side effects of aspartame include:

Eye
blindness in one or both eyes
decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision
pain in one or both eyes
decreased tears
trouble with contact lenses
bulging eyes

Ear
tinnitus - ringing or buzzing sound
severe intolerance of noise
marked hearing impairment

Neurologic
epileptic seizures
headaches, migraines and (some severe)
dizziness, unsteadiness, both
confusion, memory loss, both
severe drowsiness and sleepiness
paresthesia or numbness of the limbs
severe slurring of speech
severe hyperactivity and restless legs
atypical facial pain
severe tremors

Psychological/Psychiatric
severe depression
irritability
aggression
anxiety
personality changes
insomnia
phobias

Chest
palpitations, tachycardia
shortness of breath
recent high blood pressure

Gastrointestinal
nausea
diarrhea, sometimes with blood in stools
abdominal pain
pain when swallowing

Skin and Allergies
itching without a rash
lip and mouth reactions
hives
aggravated respiratory allergies such as asthma

Endocrine and Metabolic
loss of control of diabetes
menstrual changes
marked thinning or loss of hair
marked weight loss
gradual weight gain
aggravated low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
severe PMS

Other
frequency of voiding and burning during urination
excessive thirst, fluid retention, leg swelling, and bloating
increased susceptibility to infection

Additional Symptoms of Aspartame Toxicity include the most critical symptoms of all
death
irreversible brain damage
birth defects, including mental retardation
peptic ulcers
aspartame addiction and increased craving for sweets
hyperactivity in children
severe depression
aggressive behavior
suicidal tendencies

Aspartame may trigger, mimic, or cause the following illnesses:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Epstein-Barr
Post-Polio Syndrome
Lyme Disease
Grave’s Disease
Meniere’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease
ALS
Epilepsy
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
EMS
Hypothyroidism
Mercury sensitivity from Amalgam fillings
Fibromyalgia
Lupus
non-Hodgkins
Lymphoma
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

These are not allergies or sensitivities, but diseases and disease syndromes. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because aspartame symptoms mock textbook ‘disease’ symptoms, such as Grave’s Disease.

Aspartame changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the levels of serotonin, tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. Therefore, it is typical that aspartame symptoms cannot be detected in lab tests and on x-rays. Textbook disorders and diseases may actually be a toxic load as a result of aspartame poisoning.

Ever gone to the doctor with real, physical symptoms, but he/she can’t find the cause? Well, it’s probably your diet, your environment, or both.

Aspartame is the common denominator for over 92 different health symptoms at the root of modern disease. The Aspartame Detoxification Program demonstrates the most effective way to reverse disease symptoms is removing the underlying cause - aspartame.

Ok - I think I'm gonna get rid of the Splena and revert back to sugar. I quit sugar cos I thought that was bad for me (and I don't need much help putting on weight lol) but the Splenda sounds a lot worse.

Wecome to my world, after painting cars for years and becoming overexposed to the chemicals I bacame hypersensitive to most chemicals, I brake out in rashs with contac, have a hard time breathing with smells like paints, perfume, cleaners and the list go's on. Even some of the meds I have taken have sent me to the ER, just like washing my clothes I have to wash them with soap and then rewash them without soap.

I'm glad this topic came up!! I first started suffering from panic attacks and DP/DR in my high school years. That was a 20 years ago,but i was always drinking diet soda and eating diet stuff (that was the big thing at the time). I was always anxious, nervous, just never felt good. I eventually quit eating or drinking anything with aspertame or any artificial sweetener about 7 years ago after reading that the chemical is so bad for the brain and can trigger all sorts of things and can cause cancer.  What a difference in how I felt on a daily basis!!! Not nearly as many panic attacks and no headaches.

Oh, recently I was chewing sugarless gum and believe it or not started feeling dizzy within 1/2 an hour. I guess I am now super sensitive to it.

I think everyone needs to stay away from these chemicals! Especially those of us with chemical imbalances in our brains.
There is enough bad stuff in our food and in the air. I drink regular soda now and then and I havent gained any weight. Everything in moderation :-)
