Hello everyone

I am about to start Lexapro within the next couple days and i am nervous.. as i always am when i start a new medicine

My doctor was going to prescribe me with Emsam, which is a new transdermal patch MAOI inhibitor, I was going to start Emsam but the list of side effects made me extremely nervous so i told him i dont want to be on that drug... Major diet restrictions and if i do eat cheese or any other aged product with it i could DIE!! NO THANK YOU!!! That just causes me way too much anxiety to even think about!

Anyhow.. he agreed to let me try another SSRI because Zoloft and Paxil didnt work for me.. so now we are trying Lexapro...

I am very sensitive to medicines and i would appreciate some encouragment for starting this new drug, thanks alot!

By the way.. He gave me a prescription for 10mg 1 a day right off the bat... i think i will just cut them in half and do 5mg for a couple weeks first before taking the whole pill... what do you guys think?

Thank you
Mario

Hi there ,

I just googled the drug and 10mg seems to be the correct starting point - then , after a minimum of 1 week the dose could be upped to 20mg if the 10mg is not effective enough.

I would speak to your doc about your concerns and ask for some reassurance rather than taking a half dose - you can always wait til you've talked to them to take the meds.

Let us know how you get on ,

 Hi
many anxiety sufferers react strongly when starting an antidepressant med and usually half the smallest dose is best for a while, then working up
however, if the zoloft and paxil were tried for about 6 weeks and didnt help, then I doubt the lexapro will either, as you mention they are all SSRI type
IMO doc should instead be trying some other type that doesnt need a diet such as effexor or mirtazepine
the MAOI type are a last resort only after all others have been tried and failed
it would also help if doc gave you lots of valium to help but seldom do
