sometimes is how I feel.

What to do

I don’t know.

When I feel this way.

I hold my face

in small hands,

lift my eyes

and pretend all the pain is gone.

I smile, and pretend I’m just the angel

who could never be bothered

with demons such as those

that chase me daily,

but they do.

I wish they’d fade

but I continue to fight

what seems a futile crusade.

Hazel eyes shift

back and forth,

mind racing,

finding myself pacing

as I catch myself wondering

how to take the shreds of happiness

left within me

and let them flourish

as though spring flowers

tasting the sweet sunshine

as the first warm air

passes over their tiny buds.

Can you taste something so natural

when it hasn’t consumed your soul in so long?

Can you flourish

in your inner soul

and break through your outer shell

to let others know what truly

resides in your heart;

an intelligent and creative mind?

Fingertips clench onto the filter

of a lit cigarette,

lips wrap around, inhaling sweetly,

taking in the smoke,

letting it drift out,

mind sifting to happier times,

imagining what could soon

and will be.

I shall find the peace of mind I deserve;

that we sufferers all deserve.

I will find that sometime,

but as I search for myself,

I find that I know

I was always as I was;

ever unchanging.

You cannot change a deep soul,

it will lie in silence, beneath the flesh,

locked in your heart,

But one day, your true spirit

will escape, and you find yourself again,

And why try to run?

When who you are is more beautiful than

you could have ever imagined?

Embrace your inner self.

Let it shine.

Very cool, Twiggygal. Your poem reminds me of a butterfly in a cocoon waiting to spread its wings.
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen."
