this past christmas was probably one of the worst ive ever had.

i developed some really bad headaches like three days before Christmas that persisted to the point I had to go to the doctor. I was diagnosed with sinusitis and put on some meds. but then the headaches changed -- really sharp pains that scared me so much that I went to the ER. I had a CT and it came out clean and so they diagnosed me with migraines...

but the thing is i cant stop worrying!!! i keep thinking its an anuerysm or a tumor or im having a stroke (unlikely since i'm 16 :P). ive suffered from what i guess could be called panic attacks -- uncontrollable shaking, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold/hot flashes, feeling like i was going crazy, tingling in my hands...

i've told my parents but they don't think i have a real disorder. but this anxiety is honestly consuming me. i havent been to school in a week and next week are midterms but im soo concerned with my health that im not even gonna study. i cant concentrate. thats unusual because im basically a straight A student.

do you think i should seek professional help for this? or just try and chill out? i just feel like my quality of life has suffered... everything makes me panic or just reminds me of something that makes me panic. i cant escape my brain!

Hi there-
I would tell you to seek out some therapy. It cant hurt! You want to nip this in the butt ASAP. Do not let it go bc the anxiety will continue to consume you until you can no longer function. The longer you let it fester the worse it will get. Trust me! My anxiety has slowly been building over the last 4 years or so and it just really came to a head last Sept or so and now I am really struggling. I wish I had gotten help earlier.
I have real bad health anxiety so I know how you feel!
You are so young and have so much to look forward to, so seek some therapy and learn all you can about anxiety disorder! Try to do something to get your mind off of it. Try studying even if you feel like you cant. I found that helped me focus on something else, even though school can cause stress!
Good luck with your midterms!

I am sorry for what you are going through! My reply is the same as the others. It really cant hurt anything for you to go and seek out some professional help. There are soo many meds and other therapies out there that could help you. I have had all the symtoms you mentioned and plenty more. I know it is scarey, but know that you are NOT alone! I will pray that you get the help you need. :-)   Hang in there! God bless.

I would suggest you try to get into a group therapy thing (especially if it has younger people in it).  I started to suffer with anxiety around your age (I'm now 59) and that's the one thing that really seemed to help - knowing you're NOT crazy and that millions of others go through the same thing.  Meds might help too but I really believe talking with others (including this wonderful site) truly help sufferers like us feel more "comfortable" and normal again.  Believe me, doing SOMETHING, ANYTHING, to keep your mind occupied is a big help too - even when it seems impossible that you can concentrate - just go through the motions.  One of the greatest pieces of advice my mother ever gave me (and she understood anxiety because she too was a sufferer) was "get up and do something - even if it's cleaning out the frig - and if you don't feel any better when you're finished - clean it out again!).  The point being - it's the "keeping busy" that's important.  Over all these years I've had bouts of anxiety/panic/depression and periods when I felt just fine.  You WILL be okay and as you learn more about this yukey disease, the more you'll realize that as devastating as it feels when you're going through it, it WILL NOT kill you and you WILL NOT go crazy.....I've been thinking for years that I will and it's never happened yet.  But I do feel so bad for you - I clearly remember how absolutely devastating it was for me when I first started to suffer.....I was sure it was just me and that I WAS crazy.  Thank God I had a parent who understood and would always talk with me and listen no matter how crazy I might have sounded.  And that's why I think the group therapy is important - most young people like to talk anyway - and especially anxiety sufferers - so that's a great forum to get out alot of crap and listen to what others go through.  So the best of luck to you - you WILL be fine (and you don't have any bad physical diseases at your age either, trust me.....I thought I had every disease in the book and I'm still going strong...what alot of time I wasted with that worrying).

I cried too with relief when i came on these forums!!!  i was so scared when I got this severe anxiety which started a few months ago.  i was sure i was crazy, or maybe schizo (even though i don't hear voices, etc.), i kept thinking the worst.  only to realize that i had anxiety symptoms.  the symptoms though were all too much for me to handle!  i can relate to you when you say that your mind won't let you rest!  welcome to the story of my life.  for some reason, my brain keeps going and going with thoughts that scare the life out of me.  i'm still working on how to block it all.  like i've told many people on here before - these forums are what keeps me sane as i suffer with this anxiety disorder!  hope you feel better!

Hello there...

Many of us suffer from what you are describing. My panic attacks started out of the blue and have continued ever since. Anytime, I have a minor medical issue, I tend to dwell on it and make it more severe. You have to put trust in the doctors (I know its hard sometimes) and tests to show that nothing is wrong with you. Many people develop migraines or constant headaches for varied reasons. I have horrible tension headaches because of my anxiety but continue to tell myself that they are just that....headaches.

Good luck :)
