Trazodone was released in the U.S. in 1982 and was the first serotonin inhibitor and non-tricyclic AD. Unfortunately, many psychiatrists quickly discarded it for depression because its effective doses (600-800mg) are far too sedating for people to tolerate.

It made a huge comeback after the SSRIs came out because it acts as a very potent antagonist on the 2A and 2C serotonin receptors, which helps to relieve the insomnia and anxiety caused by the SSRIs. Many doctors prescribe it in lower doses (25-150mg) with an SSRI.

I take it with my Zoloft and find it very effective for relieving anxiety and insomnia. I also have taken tiny doses of 25mg during the day if I have a lot of anxiety and find it very helpful.

Hello Rock

I have been taking Trazodone for about a year now and I take it with other anxiety and depression meds. They have just uped my dose this week to 100 mg so I am still in the new adjusting stage but it has made a lot of differance this past year. Please keep us updated on how it works for you and were always here if you have any questions.

Rock
This med has been a God send for me
It helps with the " stinking thinking " at night for me and helps me sleep like a babe
It works by shutting your brain off and letting you relax
I do recommend it although I am not a doc as we all know I am a firm believer in this med for me at least with a hot milk
How ya doing otherwise my friend
Luvs ya

My pdoc prescribed that to me a while ago because I was having sleeping problems. I never took it though, and I still have problems sleeping from racing thoughts, and I usually just take half a klonopin at night when it gets bad - but I'd rather not. I'm thinking though that maybe I should take the trazadone, its been sitting in my drawer for a few months... Lyn what dosage did you start on? I don't want to start taking meds regularly again though - is this a med that I would have to do that with, or is it as needed? I can't remember what my pdoc said, it was a few months ago.

I took trazadone both times I was in the neuropsych unit. They give it to EVERYONE. I'm not kidding. All of us up there were on it in one dose or another. I was on 50 mg and it did nothing for me. I took it with all the other antidepressants I take and it had no effect on me. I couldn't sleep, couldn't get my thoughts to shut off and it made my migraines worse. In short, I hated it. The doctor took me off of it and put me on seroquel instead. I don't know if these drugs are related but that's the route my doc took and the seroquel is wonderful. I sleep better than I have in a long time now that they are at therapeutic levels. I had a hard time for a few weeks. I would never go back on the trazadone. I'm glad it works for some people like it's supposed to. Everyone reacts differently to things though.

The starting dose of Trazodone for insomnia is usually 50mg at bedtime. It has a short half-life of 4-6 hours, while its metabolite, mCPP, has a longer half-life of about 6-8 hours. Most people do fine at 50-100mg, although I've heard some people take up to 200mg.

I take 100mg and it works great for me.
