Hello Jaymay

Honey I'm sorry you had a tough night last night and you might have a few more before your meds take full affect. BUT it will get better as time passes. You should feel a differance starting to happen in about another week and full affect in about 2 more weeks if not then call your dr and let them know this meds is not working for you. They had to play with my meds 3 times before they got the dosage right and it was weeks for everything to balance out. Hang in there hun and come here and talk to us anytime. I tried to catch you in chat earlier but didn't get there quick enough. Hang in there a little bit longer hun your strength will provail in the long run.

(((HUGS)))

Hi Jay,

It will get better, you just need to give the med time.  Once your body gets used to taking it, the side effects will reduce.
You are doing well - keep going with it and take care

Hi Jay,

It took my side effects a few weeks to disappear completley.  I started effexor in hospital so I did have a benzo, I took lorazepam for a few weeks.  They only prescribe it for very short term in the UK.

It will take 4-6 weeks before you feel the full effects of the effexor and then your doc may or may not increase the dose depending on how you are doing.

Please try not to worry - what you are feeling is normal and the side effects will go.  You are doing really well.

Take care

Hey Jay
I am on day 7 with Luvox. I have posted in another thread that I am having increased anxiety for a few hours per day. I am sensitive to SSRIs (Effexor is technically not but close) in the beginning. I had plenty of anxiety from Lexapro, but it failed to reach my OCD. Started Luvox, and sure enough, I get a "spike" for about three or four hours an evening. BUT, it seems to be lessening and I can feel the positive effects coming on. You need to stick it out. I am. I do take .25 or .50 mg. of Klonopin when it's bad. My Pdoc tells me to take it. I am wary of benzos, but he says if you go as prescribed and are not an addictive personality type no worries. I would definitely take a benzo while adjusting if your doctor agrees.

BTW, my Brother takes Effexor and so do his two grown daughters. They swear by it. I have OCD. They have GAD. Effexor seems to be a better choice for them. Luvox for my OCD. Good luck!

hi, im new to the forum !

effexor (altho i was on effexor xr) is a great choice if you battle social anxiety and GAD - it also helped with my OCD a bit, and gave me some energy at times.  the pitfalls of effexor(atleast from my experience), was increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, aggressiveness, and honestly - occassional carelessness - i was taking btwn 75-150 ml.  and the withdrawls weening off the drug were outrageous - I have been off of it COMPLETELY for a little over 2 months and I am still to this day experiencing those "brain zaps" now and again.  and I have unfortunately gained 10 pounds coming off of it - that has a lot to with the increased resting heart rate I had while taking it..now that I am off..my HR has gone back to normal.  You must come off this drug as slowly as possible.  I am in no way trying to be negative about this drug as everyone is different...there are ups and downs about taking any of these types of drugs.  But I have to say out of all of these drugs - effexor most definitely has the worst withdrawl effects

I'm on day 9 on 100 mgs of Luvox. I have a few tough hours every day. I take the pill at 3 PM feel pretty good. But , then it hits at about three or four hours later. I take .25 mgs of Klonopin. But, there was plenty of breakthrough tonight.

But, here is the thing. I know it's the meds. Not my OCD. I am able to distinguish between the two. It calms down after a couple of hours and that duration of time seems to be shrinking. Luvox is already showing positive sides that I'm very optimistic that when I get through the side effect period all will be well. BTW, let me tell you. This is not my imagination. I know my stuff. This is definitely the medication. Some people are very fortunate they have few, if any side effects. I had this when I started Prozac in 1989. When they increased the dose same thing. When I started Lexapro. Some of us are just very sensitive to SSRIs. On the other hand, I have no sexual difficulties, minor weight gain, no nausea, no headaches, no dizziness, no drowsiness problem. So I guess I will just get through with the anxiety spikes. BTW, Jay, you may be different. The side effects usually crop up anew when increasing the dose. I asked my Pdoc when i begin the count to when I can expect kick in and relief from side effects? When i began Luvox at 50 mgs? Or when i started on 100 mgs. It's the latter. This is Day 9 on 100 mgs. Day 16 on Luvox.
