If you're on a benzo (such as ativan, xanax, klonipin, etc), how much do you take? How often? How long you been on it? Is your doctor okay with it? And any other points you may like to share!
janet
PS-I am prescribed xanax .5mg a day as needed, but haven't been taking it, but would if I needed to. Took it for 12 years with no addiction problems. It was a lifesaver for me!

I only took lorazepam in hospital when I was an inpatient and was only allowed it for 4 weeks. In the UK, lorazepam cannot be taken as an outpatient. Diazepam can be prescribed but for short term only (about 4 weeks) and doctors will not give it any longer than that as they worry about addiction. Doctors are very strict when it comes to benzo's. I don't know anyone in the Uk that has been prescribed them long term, it is very rare. It seems different countries work differently.

I just hurt my back and have a muscle spasm and my doc prescribed diazepam as it works as a muscle relaxant. He would only give me 5 days supply of the lowest dose.

have been on Xanax for 23 years, 1 mg 4 X a day, I have had no side effects from it, I still get the anixety and PA's but at least there bareable with the xanax, doc said that it is not hard on the liver like some other drugs and if I needed to take a extra one a day I could, I rarely do this though, I know I must likley will on our upcoming trip only 9 days to go eyes  I look at my xanax like a diabetic looks at insulin I need it. I am diabetic to but on nothing for that just diet controlled

Hi Janet,

I am prescribed xanax .25mg as needed. I take it rarely, maybe once a month or less now, but in the beginning I took it regularly. It helps a lot if I am having a panic attack or major anxiety. I've been on it about 2 years. *Hugs*

some good input here and I agree it is helpful for sure when in panic mode for me it helps calm the sores down as stress makes them pop out like 90
Docs are strict with these meds in many places for same reason ativan was suppose to " REPLACE " valium and was tooted as no addictive way back when it forst came out but they have now mad e their mind up that it too is just as addictive I have taken sins I was a young mom and I know I still need the odd one but I have come along way like you bear
If you need them please do take them as RX............

I take 2mg of clonozapam every night as part of my med routine.

I have valium 5mg to be taken as needed, but depending on which health professional I talk too it could be a couple of times of day for really bad days to don't take it at all. confused All I feel now is guilt and try to live with the extreme anxiety, probably denying myself easy relief if I'd just take a valium.

about a year ago i started taking klonopin (clonzepam) regularly at night, .5 mg, and also as needed when things got really bad (max would be 1mg sublingual) during the day. then a about 6 months ago i started taking them when needed at night time, usually .25mg, sometimes .5mg. i was doing that to help with anxious thoughts at night (i usually wake up in the middle of the night and can never fall bak asleep - racing thoughts!) but then i realized about a month ago that i still had my prescription for trazadone, which is supposedly much better for insomnia. everytime i take that its worked quite well, so i just take that as needed at night time now, and the klonopin only during really anxious times :)

Thanks everyone for replies...I think it is a shame that some docs (including whole countries like the UK) deny their citizens the availability of benzos in some cases...I wouldn't be suprised if it eventually gets like that in the US too. As has been pointed out before, truly anxious patients are very unlikely to abuse them as they are too afraid of addiction-the very thing that the docs think they're going to help their anxious patients prevent! Well DUH!!!! I sure miss my first pdoc I had back in the early 90's! he had an open-minded attitude. For all I know, that may be the reason he left. I really don't know. I've been a "good little patient" by avoiding the xanax, but sometimes comfort myself with the knowledge that the xanax is here if I truly need it. Most of the time, if I wait a little bit, I end up not having to take it. :)
I truly believe that the 2 amino acids I'm on have helped me somewhat. They are Taurine (1000-1500 mg a day) and L-Tyrosine (500mg a day). If anyone is interested, google it for yourself and you'll see what I mean. Or email me. I'm NOT selling anything. It's just something I've found that really helps me some! I've taken a LOT of different alternative stuff and these are the ones that actually helped!

Ok - so i took the valium (diazepam) that my doc prescribed for my back and it made me feel rubbish. I just assumed that it would make me feel the same as the lorazepam did but its didnt. Felt real drowsy and hungover this morning when I woke up and didn't like the feeling at all. Lorazepam never made me feel that way. I only have a weeks supply of this anyway as doc's here are OVER cautious about benzos!!!!
Am going to not take them and hope my pulled muscle stops spasming on its own!!!

I've got a prescription for ativan as needed with about 12+ refills. When I first started it I took one every day for about a week and now I only take one occasionally. They seem to really help and don't make me tired or zombied out like some other benzos do.

I take Klonopin (Clonazepam) to help with side effect anxiety with Luvox. I take anywhere between .50-1 Mg per day. I find it extremely helpful. I have been taking it since September since I've been trying three different ssris in that time. I read all these stories of concerns about addiction. Docs tell me to take it. They want me to tolerate the ssri. Eventually when the Luvox kicks in we will ween off the Klonopin. The concern about addiction is highly overdone. My Pdoc says he has patients on up to 6 mgs. per day. Long term. If you have no history of addiction and you follow doctor's orders relax.

IamMe,
Have they tried you on a mood stabilizer such as seroquel or such? HAve they considered changing from klonipin to another benzo for a while, since you're immune to it? Are you on an AD?
PLease let us know! We care!

I am new here!!!  But I already feel at home!!  I have taken paxil 20 mg for years.  Seems to have pooped out.  So right now I am on 40 mg paxil and Klonopin.  I was on 5 mg 3 x per day.  I have weaned down to .25 mg 3 times per day.  Have had a few bad days, but still doable.  I feel pretty good today.  Hang in there, there is light at the end!!!
