I have posted about this before but it just seems to be getting worse as I get older.  My fear of going to the doctor and/or having tests done.  It's been bad since I was very young but now this phobia has overtaken me.  The latest is that I just need to go to the eye doctor to get a REAL presciption for glasses.  I've been wearing drug store glasses for the last ten years and beside doing some damage from that, I know I need trifocals as it's getting impossible to focus on the computer at work.  But here I am avoiding even having an eye exam for fear they'll find something - glaucoma, impending blindness, brain tumor, you name it.  How can anyone become so fearful -I'm an intelligent woman who's conquered many obstacles during my life but this one (which is part of my GAD) has consumed me.  Just the thought of entering a doc's office makes my blood pressure surge. I'm so ashamed of being like this - especially when I have a close relative and friend who have recently been fighting breast cancer and doing it courageously and fearlessly.  It makes me feel like such a loser.  How does one get over these fears/phobias?  On the very few times I actually HAVE made it to the doc's office I almost pass out from fear - my heart beats furiously and my blood pressure goes through the roof.  I can't imagine where this all came from - other than some freudian explanations that could be taken from an early childhood case of Rheumatic Fever and befriending a little girl in the same room who eventually died during the night one night from stomach cancer (she was only 5 and I was 7).  I recognize intellectually that it's all so foolish and yet emotionally I still can't overcome this. Any advice?

Karen might have something to add to this she is pretty good with the pragmatics of this kin of thing but I think most wuld opt for CBT there is a free online one if you want it let me know okay

Andwes,

I have the same/similar issue...I have not over come it to tell you the truth I aint been to a doc or dentist or eye doc in prolly over 2 yrs now. Last time I went was because I needed a physical for school or something...If you find anything that works please post. I think other than CBT/Therapy....Unfortunately biting the bullet and just going may be the only option...

Hang in there...

Thanks so much for your kind advice. I know it amounts to "biting the bullet" and just going - I feel like such a coward that it just makes me have more negative feelings about myself - so maybe by doing this I can gain back some self-confidence. I'm going to start with just going to the eye doc - that should be an easy one for most people...then maybe I can work up to more important things like having my heart checked, etc. I really don't have much choice as I am really having difficulty focusing on computer -my eyes are straining so mcuh that it makes me feel like my eyes are crossing and even makes me dizzy after awhile. How crazy is this to let something like this go just because you're afraid. Well I'll let you know how I make out. But thanks again for your support - this site is wonderful for people like us.

Andwes,

I aagree with Lyn that a therapist is probably the best bet. Although going to the doc usually works on my anxiety, I dont have the fear that you explain. Except for blood tests - then I nearly pass out (actually did the first time!).

Your idea of starting with the eye doc is a good one - like Michelle said, little steps....

Wishing you the best in beating this.
