hi .. i tried "fluoextine HCI B.P" for social phobia. i took 10mg in the afternoon and only 10-20 minutes later i started feeling my chest tightning in the middle. it was not unbearable but still quite uncomfortable. is it that the medicine is not suiting me or could it just be that i panicked because i was scared og taking the medicine in the first place. after that i didnt take any more of it.

five days later i tried clonazepam 0.10 mg and felt the same tightning of my chest in the middle and it stayed for a few hours just like the last time .

In the past i have had reaction to other medicines..  ipbrufan caused blood in urine.  some antibiotic i took once caused an allergic reaction tht lasted more than 8 months.

so am i panicking when taking these medicines or is it tht they might not be suiting me ..  hard to tell because i took such low doses.. i didnt wana take any risk.

Also im thinkin of tryin bromazepam 1.5 mg (half of a 3 mg tablet). So i wanted to know if bromazepam will suit me or not?.. because clonazepam didnt.. and ther more or less the same and both are benzo.

please help. i suffer from mild social phobia. it was really bad before but now i have become much better. without any medical help . all done with positive self talk and the will to come out of this misery. any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. thankyou :)

Hi floppy..Welcome to HW tongue
Please go back to the health prof. that prescribed your meds and explain the symptoms that you have experienced..personally I would not bother to try the meds again until I had done so.
Meds are not for everyone..and you may find that counselling/therapy is more effective..or that posting here at HW really helps as many people will be able to relate to your condition.
Let us know how you get on.

You shouldnt take meds not prescribed by a doctor...especially with your history of allergies...can you see a regular doc just to get checked out...also I would stay away from trying meds on your own.

Welcome to this board. You will find many friends here.

If you can't take meds, perhaps you could do the CBT therapy online class. A nice lady on this board was offering it and emailing it.

You will be in my prayers. Please let us know how you're doing.

There is an online CBT called mood gym training or something like that you could google the name and try and find it. No one I know has found a "quick fix/cure all" for anxiety so keep that in mind and also I meant you should go to the doctor about the symptoms with the meds you have been trying. Experimentation with medication outside of a doctors supervision can be extremely dangerous and should not be done. Please be safe and see if your primary care doc can prescribe you for the anxiety.

thank you all for your kind advices, ill try to go to a doctor..but i guess after the wedding because right now i dont really want to worry anyone at home... as they dont know that i am suffering from social phobia. i mean u guys can just imagine if social phobia is not really recognised and understood by people in the western/developed countries.. than in coutries like pakistan it can be 10 folds more difficult to explain to ur family and others what ur going thru..mostly they will ignore it but thinking that its just shyness and nothing else. i will have to explain the whole thing to my family.. but i know i need to wait till after the wedding is over. because it will take time and alot more for them to understand and except my ilness. also i cant really pay for online treatment. i just wish there was a temporary and safe way to relieve my anxiety so that i can make it thru my sisters wedding. after that i can start looking for a doctor or someone who can help me and guide me in the right direction . once again thanks for ur help. i deeply appreciate it :)

thanks alot lyn :) ill surely do tht. and yes ill try to avoid experimenting with medicines on my own, i dont want to take any risks. but u have to understand it was all done out of desperation. with the days for the wedding closing in and fears increasing..its hard not to try something to relieve yerself of this misery. i hope i can enjoy the wedding and all other happy times to come just like everyone else. i know i am much better than before. i can be around people.. yes sure im uncomfortable most of the times, but i still somehow manage it. sometimes i just become really quite and its hard to talk.. the mind goes blank and the ahrder i try to think of something to say.. the more difficult it becomes.

btw is there a part of the brain that i can have removed.. so that i never get anxious again? :P (just kidding)

you know i wasnt always like this .. well i guess most of us werent.

it all started after a trip of ecstacy at a friends place. although it wasnt my first time but tht night i took two pills.. and from the very next day i started feeling unconfortable in social situations. infact there was a time when i couldnt even sit in the lounge with my family and watch tv without my heart racing and breathing becomin extremely abnormal.. sometimes i would just hold my breath but tht would only make it worst. my muscles would become stiff and then when it became really bad. i would just get up and go and lock my self in my room.. but thankfully now im much better. although i still have to go out and start sociallizing again .. i have been staying home mostly since the last few months. and then i have to go back to college after the summers. so i have to start working on my phobia .. i know i will improve.. i have no doubt. (btw i dont do ecstacy or anyother drung anymore, atleast thts one thing positive that came with my social phobia :P .. i do drink occasionally and that even never more than 2-3 drinks)

btw does any one know of any natural 'anything' that can be taken to relieve anxiety?. and are they safe?... things like kavakava, st johns wort, coffee, 5htp, some amino acids.. are they safe if taken in moderate quantities?

lastly i'd would just like to say tht ther is nothing in this world that is impossible. if we try hard enough, never give up and really believe in out selfs.. nothing can stop us from achieving what we want. in my case, to become pro social .. and i know i will, its just a matter of time! :)
