A few thoughts on meds for anxiety:

valium type are useful for everyone if taken and prescribed sensibly, its rare for an anxiety sufferer to have an addictive type personality and to take too many , a common problem is getting an anxiety sufferer to take a large enough dose of them.

Antidepressants, very profitable for the drug companies and oversold and overpromoted to docs as the magic cure for anxiety, will be a big help for anxiety IF you can find 1 that works for you and that has early side effects that you can cope with.

anxiety sufferers generally should start with a very low dose and slowly work up, valium type meds help in getting used to the AD and tide you over until the AD starts working which can take up to 5 or 6 weeks

BETA BLOCKERS these help with the physical but not mental problems from anxiety such a s the shakes, blushing, etc. If you are on blood pressure meds, one should be a beta blocker, IMO but often isnt

OLDER ANTIPSYCHOTICS, still favored by some older docs but generally agreed to have no place in the treating of anxiety

NEWER so called ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS, maybe worth trying if several antidepressants have failed

MAJOR TRANQUILLISERS completely unsuitable for anxiety, raising ths possibility that you have been misdiagnosed, if fears and panic attacks are the main problem

IMIPRAMINE, the bedwetting dose of this tricyclic med is often helpful for bladder urgency and burning if caused by anxiety, its an old med that sadly most docs dont think of

ALFALFA tablets from health food store, contain many enzymes and may help with tummy upsets, smells and gas from food rotting in intestines, they may get the digestive system working properly again

BUSPAR, a heavily advertised and promoted to docs tranquilliser, almost useless on its own, may have some help if taken with an antidepressant, in theory. it needs to be taken daily and isnt helpful for panic attacks, promoted as the non addictive alternative to valium, but  it isnt, so save your money.

sadly in general, the meds that are the most expensive and highly promoted to docs are usually prescribed but these often a rent the best, for example generic prozac is probably just as helpful as the expensive patented new antidepressants

recovered former longtime anxiety and panic attack sufferer and helper of other sufferers  but no training or  qualifications in medicine or psychology, any remarks that may be taken as advice must be confirmed with doctor or other health professional

Please do check with your doc before increasing or coming off meds make sure you are working with them on the page YOU want to be on...........

Also watch for any interactions between natral and pharmaceutical meds....some can cause a bit of problem
Keep all medicines up and away especially the benzo's so they do not disappear or a child gets ahold of them

I guess this is the place to ask meds questions of others?
Any Effexor XR takers here, do you get lightheaded when you have had a dose increase and if so how long until it settles? I went up 2 days ago from 75mg to 112.5mg. Noticed only a lightheaded kind of woozy feeling that is transient in nature.
Thanks!

Hi Sharann
I have read from the other Effexor takers that this will sometimes happen when you increase the med
I will add something to title to see if more get to this okay
Be well

Make sure you check medications for Expiry they are not bad BUT they will not have the potency and please do not share meds at all you are on the med thru your doc .....this could cause both of you to have some legal problems if something comes up

Twiggy currently we can not afford to put in new forums due to database and server limitations...more forums is more expense. at this time we can not afford to expand. For now we have this thread and I will brainstorm and talk to other mods and our Admin about some other possible solutions.

Okay....

I finally got up the nerve to take my Klonopin yesterday. It was at 3:45 in the afternoon, and I took a half dose (.25 mg).

As far as I could tell, it didn't do anything at all. I had a few little bouts of nausea, but they were pretty minor. I remained bloated the whole time. Never felt particularly relaxed at all. Out of boredom I went to bed at 11 pm.

Then, at 3:30 in the morning, I woke up WIDE awake. I got up to use the restroom and then started feeling very nauseated. It wouldn't go away. Eventually I took a Dramamine which didn't make me less nauseous but did put me to sleep. Went back to bed at around 5:00.

Woke up at 12:00 noon, feeling pretty good. Allergies had been a big problem for two days but they seem to be gone. I just took a .5 mg dose (the full dose) of Klonopin to see how it goes this time.

Question:

Is it possible that the nausea I experienced at 3:30 was due to the Klonopin? Am I going to experience it again roughly 12 hours from now? Or was it a coincidence? Even in my paranoid state I'm thinking coincidence...if I didn't think that I sure wouldn't have taken it again just now, I can tell you that.

I know it was a small dose, but I really did expect to feel SOMETHING from it within an hour of taking it. Felt nothing. Two hours later: nothing. Four hours later: nothing. If it did anything to me it was so subtle I didn't notice. I was actually kind of on the restless/bored side. It was like I couldn't tolerate sitting down.

Any ideas?

PS --

I kept a log of how I felt after taking it yesterday. It was in the interest of knowing how it affected me for driving purposes, etc. Here are the entries:

1. 3:47pm -- took .25 mg Klonopin
2. 4:09pm -- nauseated...prob not K related. sipped water and ate saltines
3. 4:18pm -- a little calmer mabye? stomach still bloated
4. 4:30pm -- still no sedation. stomach symptoms remain
5. 3:48pm -- one hour in. no change
6. 5:04pm -- anxious spell
7. 6:02pm -- no sedation stomach still bloated and uncomfortable
8. 6:53pm -- feeling quite ill
9. 8:18pm -- not ill but not well; stomach still bloated.
10. 11:00pm -- bloated, fairly relaxed but i don't know if it's the K
11. 11:09pm -- going to bed. Not sedated, bloated but not nauseated
12. 3:35am -- woke up and became very, very nauseated

KLONOPIN II

1. 1:30pm -- took .5 mg Klonopin as experiment. Not anxious. Still slightly bloated but no nausea. Allergies are better, body temp back to normal.
2. 2:05pm -- Feeling very weird. Somewhat anxious. Not "bad" but not "good". Not sure what to make of this.
3. 2:20pm -- Still weird, but anxiousness has decreased somewhat. Feel compelled to move around. Feel hungry?

Do you get nausea when you have panic? Could you have woken up in a panic attack?

I think you might just be paying too much attention to it. Perhaps you should next time not detail EVERYTHING and just note sedation...Do not look for the symptoms perhaps try once with NO documentation

You're probably right. I'm very "data oriented". Very observational. Perhaps I should've been a scientist.

edit:

The Klonopin I took today is definitely having an effect. "Unsteady gait" is the most pronounced effect...it feels as if I've slammed a few doubles at the bar, without the euphoria. I still don't feel calm, though. Isn't that what it's supposed to do? Maybe it'll take a little longer for that feeling to kick in. I'd love to hear from any experienced users.

edit: definitely feeling calmer now. stomach's not as bloated. I just ate something about .5 hour ago and my stomach's making some crazy noise, but I don't think it's anything.

I think Normal was spot on just relax and take the meds let them work sounds like they are doing the trick now I am sure the nausea was brought on prolly by your fear of the whole med thing
I am glad you are doing better

Klonopin takes a day or two to build up and reach steady state in your body. After that, you should feel significantly better and see improvement in your symptoms.

Let us know how you do!

My bottle says I can take it twice a day. I took the first one at 1:30 and it is currently 7:40.

Is it too early to take another?

NO IMO I think it should be okay if you need it right now
You are allowed BID so you can gauge when to take first one and then a few hours inbetween but if you take them to close you have not got the next one if you panic you see what I mean

I would judge it accordingly and let your doc know the 2 a day is helping BUT you feel you might need one for in case
so ask him for 3 daily he may give it I dont know for sure
Be well

Sorry, I'm confused. You said NO, but then you said it would be okay if I need it.

I'm not sure what "BID" stands for.

Do you think 1:30 and 8:30 are too close together? Given what I felt today, I think two a day would be plenty. I'll take them in the morning and then late in the afternoon, and that should probably do it. Once I have it in my system like Geebs says, I think I might do even better.

The nurse at the Dr.'s office says I should take them as needed, but the bottle says 2x a day. I don't see how these could work as needed because they take a while to take effect. If I get a refill I think I'm going to ask for those sublingual wafers or whatever.
