tongue  Gonna try this again lol
WE are trying to keep all the questions about medications in one thread ......
Could you please post your questions here and they will be answered by those that do take them or have ......
And by those that have knowledge of them
WE are not professionals here and can only answer to what  experiences we have had or are having with Medications ..........
Please do not feel we are being heavy handed or anything else we are only trying to make it easier for all on the forum and those new to forum ......

For Example : Please see post below from Harry
It was on other medication thread and had to be copied and pasted to here

There are many other meds  out there and here that we do discuss
Feel free to add your med and ask your question about med ....
It will be answered by someone that is taking it or has or has prior knowledge from use......

Hoping we can keep this strictly as a medication thread ........

Thanks all

** This is a post from Harry2 on last medication thread we started
A few thoughts on meds for anxiety:

valium type are useful for everyone if taken and prescribed sensibly, its rare for an anxiety sufferer to have an addictive type personality and to take too many , a common problem is getting an anxiety sufferer to take a large enough dose of them.

Antidepressants, very profitable for the drug companies and oversold and overpromoted to docs as the magic cure for anxiety, will be a big help for anxiety IF you can find 1 that works for you and that has early side effects that you can cope with.

anxiety sufferers generally should start with a very low dose and slowly work up, valium type meds help in getting used to the AD and tide you over until the AD starts working which can take up to 5 or 6 weeks

BETA BLOCKERS these help with the physical but not mental problems from anxiety such a s the shakes, blushing, etc. If you are on blood pressure meds, one should be a beta blocker, IMO but often isnt

OLDER ANTIPSYCHOTICS, still favored by some older docs but generally agreed to have no place in the treating of anxiety

NEWER so called ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS, maybe worth trying if several antidepressants have failed

MAJOR TRANQUILLISERS completely unsuitable for anxiety, raising ths possibility that you have been misdiagnosed, if fears and panic attacks are the main problem

IMIPRAMINE, the bedwetting dose of this tricyclic med is often helpful for bladder urgency and burning if caused by anxiety, its an old med that sadly most docs dont think of

ALFALFA tablets from health food store, contain many enzymes and may help with tummy upsets, smells and gas from food rotting in intestines, they may get the digestive system working properly again

BUSPAR, a heavily advertised and promoted to docs tranquilliser, almost useless on its own, may have some help if taken with an antidepressant, in theory. it needs to be taken daily and isnt helpful for panic attacks, promoted as the non addictive alternative to valium, but it isnt, so save your money.

sadly in general, the meds that are the most expensive and highly promoted to docs are usually prescribed but these often a rent the best, for example generic prozac is probably just as helpful as the expensive patented new antidepressants

Harry ....I copied and pasted to this new thread ...Looking forward to your input on medications

When she talked to Doctor about it was told that it is not usuallly recommened but to go ahead
It worked for her withing 10 minutes '
There are Klonopin wafers as well as other meds that can and do go under tonue for fast relief ......

Thanks Howly my bad i read that you posted the meaning of BID after i did you beat me to it lol no worries, i have a question i have been on klonopin for a very long time now and is no longer in my opinion doing it;s thing i could talk to pysch doc about upping the dose or would i benifit to switching to something else to like xanax. I started taking valarian root tablets again which was ok'd by pharmasist. It was that or Melatonin, i am having such a rough time with sleep and is causing me to feel ill and have headaches. I see my pysch doc on the 3rd of April and i have alot to discuss with him, as i am still somewhat emotional and have some crying episodes. Well that's my vent and question rolled in one lol. Talk to ya soon Twiggy2 and thanks in advance for your reply. :)

If you have been on it for a long period of time it might have to be increased or switched

If you are still not drinking i would ask the doc about increasing to see how that goes first
take care

Got a ? about Buspar.  It seems Harry is against it, but seeing I was just prescribed this today, I was wondering if anyone has used this and what where your results?  I tried this once many years ago and recall it not being a good experience, but since my anxiety has reared its ugly head this past week my GP thinks I should try it, as the pdoc I say in fall suggested it.

I will be starting on a very low dose of 5 mgs, and will get up to 5 mg/3x/day.  I am really nervous about this.

I Hope someone who has used this will take the time to read thru this Q & A's to help me!

Thanks,

Everyone has their own med preferences...I think there are several on this board on the med. I do not think it is as widely prescribed as some of the others. If you search back in the archives you might find a few threads on this med.

I have been on ativan for 2 months now. My doctor gave them to me on an as needed basis. It says I can take 1 mg a day. When I take the full mg I am high and spacey for hours, and then crasj and feel awful afterward. When I take half it doesn't do anything. Anyone have any suggestions or advice ??

I take when needed up to 3 2 mg ativan when pyoderma is in full swing BUT I never feel high or spacy
Perhaps take 2/3 of a 1 mg and see what happens .....
I am sure Harry will be along to help you out

I think when it comes to benzo's everyone is different. I feel spacey on 1mg of ativan. The feeling wears off but I don't feel bad after it. I only take it when needed.
Try what lyn suggested and take 2/3 of it instead and see how you feel.

TO BTFINVY

the spacyness is common until you get used to the med, try 3 quarters of a tablet then one later, spaceyness makes it useful as a sleeping pill if needed

TO GEEPER

lexapro is one of many prozac type antidepressants , if expensive for you, generic citalopram is almost the same and cheaper, see my comments re antidepressants

if it works for you, it will be a big help for anxiety and/or depression, start  with about 5mg and gradually work up to 10 or 2o, must be taken daily for 2 to 5 weeks to see whether it will work for you, xanax helps reduce any early side effects and goes well with lexapro

Well, I've started my Buspar. I started with 5 mgs Friday night, and this morning I added the seconded dose of 5 mgs. I will do that for a few days and then add the third dose of 5 mgs.

So far no bad side effects! Yeah! The very first time I was on it years ago,[I can't remember the dosing etc] I didn't have a good reaction. I am wondering if I started off with the whole shebang istead of more slowly like I am now.

I am still taking and extra .25 mgs clonazapam for a bit yet. But I definetly am feeling better than I was 1 week ago!

Now that I know anxiety is an "issue" for me, I plan on going thru the program my hubby bought for himself from the Stresscenter on Stress and Anxiety. I think it will be a good thing.

I copied and pasted your question to this thread okay any problem with that let me know okay just easier to keep all the med qn a's in one place ...email me if you dont want it done and I will take it out ..LYN

so I've been taking my Buspar[generic]for about 1 1/2 wks now. I am finding it is really messing with my already messed up sleep!

there have been 2 nights now where I couldn't sleep until around 5 am. I already take sleep meds, and it isn't working to good. I am now taking my evening dose of Buspar at around 8 pm, and morning dose around 7 ish. I'm am supposed to be taking a third dose too, but where can I fit that in between the hrs of the ones I am already taking? I can't find anything on the net that tells you how many hrs are supposed to be between doses.

This is getting alittle frustrating. With my FM, sleep is difficult enough, but is oh so very important!

Any ideas?

Sweet
