I start my new job tomorrow and right now I'm getting so worked up over it to the point that I'm on the brink of a panic attack. I'm finding it really difficult to breathe, my heart is beating wildy, I feel sick to the pit of my stomach and I feel tearful. I'm worrying about absolutely everything: being able to wake up early in the morning...the bus being on time...having decent work mates...being able to cope with the work...it's all so irrational because people cope with this every single day, so why is it that I always have to get so irrationally anxious over things that are so trivial?!

Sigh. :( I think I'll have a nice hot bath in a minute to try to calm down.

Try to relax and calm down and think rationally. What is the worst that can happen?

Try not to focus on the negatives ... focus on the positives, for example; how good this new job will be, the new people you will meet etc etc.

Let us know how it goes and take care.

Thank you. I am trying to calm down, I'm singing along to the radio which seems to help!

Good for you. Try anything that helps you relax. Don't let your anxiety overcome you. You are in control of it.

Good luck for tomorrow - you will do great.

Keep trying...We all let the worry get the best of us. Take it one day at a time. I am sure you will do great.

Hi-Polly- I am five weeks into a new job, after having the same job for 18 years, so I know exactly how you are feeling.  I remember walking into the office the first day, reminding myself to breathe.  What actually got me through the first week was picturing myself going home each day saying "I made it through the day, and it wasn't so bad!!" Before you know it, you will be at that five week point too!! Hang in there- you can do it!!! Let me know how you make out!!

I know exactly how you feel - I'm starting a new job in two weeks and I'm not only nervous about the job itself, but I'm scared to death to take the physical I have to have first (posted under another topic today) as I suffer with health anxiety especially and am always afraid they'll find something that will be life threatening (and in this case, cost me the job).    I think starting a new job is terribly nerve-wracking no matter who we are, but for those of us with anxiety/panic it's even scarier.  I'm sure you will do just fine but I can also sympathize with you about your feelings - I'm right there with you.

I would love to hear how your first couple of days went! I am starting a new job (first one in a very long time) at the end
of this month. I am a nervous wreck. I have had numerous anxious moments as I think about it and as I went through
all my pre-job information that I received in the mail today.

I have a wonderful therapist who, as luck may or may not have it, is about to leave on maternity leave for 3 months.
She has referred me to another person who I have called to check in with. Hoping to connect with her as well.

I was searching tonight for others in the same boat and ran across this group. Amazing!

Thanks for being out there....

Hope everyone is doing okay now on their new jobs - mine doesn't start til April 16th but I went through the same "angst" when I went through all the paperwork they sent me in the mail to complete.....serious background check, drug screen, physical....yuck....makes me nervous just thinking about it all.  And I dont really have anything bad in my background (except credit stinks) and don't do any drugs but everything makes me nervous so......

Hey there:

Hope your first day on the job went well. By now, you're pretty well into it. Just wanted to send a note to say that I know what you're going through. I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks, and already I'm plagued with pangs of anxiety and negative thinking (i.e. what if my new boss if mean, what if they make me work until all hours of the night, what if I can't do the job, etc.).

Victoria had some really good advice. Simple as it seems, it never occurred to me to think of the positives. :-)
