Hi ncbill
Well I guess it all comes down to quality of life..from what I can gather from your post your life is somewhat limited due to anxiety etc.
Have you tried any form of counselling/therapy - sometimes events in our lives that we thought we had dealt with have a bad habit of following us around..they sit just under the surface and without us realising cause us bigtime anxiety...being able to unearth the cause of the problem and learn new skills to deal with anxiety could be a step in the right direction for you just now.
Have you considered seeking help thru natural/homeopathic remedies?
There are heaps of resources available thru HW - if you look to the right of here you will see a list of helpful articles, books etc to help you tongue
I know meds are not for everyone but I totally agree with Cappys answer..a comprimise could be the answer.
I wish you well..keep us posted.
