Has anyone had a few drinks while taking Effexor?  I know it says to avoid it but it said that for Paxil and Zoloft too.  But I never had any problems going out for a few beers after work while taking those.  Is it any different with Effexor?  I dont want to go out and get tanked or do shots or anything.  Just have a few beers with friends.

Drew

Welcome. I am Kitt.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking EFFEXOR  is stated on all the information.

I would not tempt fate to find out what happens. You could talk to your physician

re this question. Keep posting.

with antidepressnts I would avoid alcahol for the first few weeks then experiment by drinking at home first

a few social drinks with friends is important to maintain morale

avoid alcahol is from the lawyers

It SEEMS that I've read something about alcohol and some of these drugs being bad for the liver or kidneys. Nurses? Any answers? I used to drink with several SSRI's, but I was in college and it couldn't be avoided. I'm much more conscious about this sort of thing these days and if I drank now while using any drug I'd be very conservative with it.

Effexor is cautioned for people with liver disease and of course alcohol can cause liver damage. Cirrhosis of the liver is the disease related with alcohol.

Cirrhosis has many causes. In the United States, chronic alcoholism and hepatitis C are the most common ones.

As far as the drinking with meds, everyone has to make there own choice.

In women, as few as two to three drinks per day have been linked with cirrhosis and in men, as few as three to four drinks per day.

This is informational only................ yeah

most prescription meds cautions include' no alcahol ' but this, IMO is written by lawyers

you should always experiment with a few drinks at home when taking  any new med as the reaction cant be predicted, otherwise you may be dancing on the table at that gathering yeah

Haha. When I was about two weeks into Klonopin I went out on a date and tried to have a drink. I asked the bartender to mix a SINGLE bourbon and coke, tall. The plan was to nurse a weak drink and just enjoy the flavor. Well, something got messed up and they brought me a STRONG double.

Needless to say, I nursed the thing very, very slowly but it STILL got me. I was so suprised that drinking such a small amount of alcohol would affect me that I started getting really nervous. It was just weird. Even though I was prepared for it, there's no way to really know what to expect. Given that limited experience, I advise people not to drink with the benzos. I've read that there's the risk of seizure with alcohol and Klonopin, but you're probably more likely to get totally smashed before that would ever happen.
