i am relatively new here.  i suffer from hypochondria and from what i've been reading, OCD too.  anyway, after a health scare last summer, i developed generalized anxiety disorder.  it helps me to come to these support forums cuz my husband and friends do not completely understand what i am going through.
the problem i have is these Mesothelioma ads that pop up on the sides of the screen.  particularly when i click on a post involving shortness of breath (i have been suffering from shortness of breath for about 5 months now).
is it really wise to allow these ads to pop up on a "support" forum for anxiety sufferers.  wouldn't it just make the anxiety worse for hypochondriacs such as myself.  i know some of you might think this is silly but this is the life of a hypochondriac. i feel distress, believe it or not, when i see these ads.  i can't even watch medical tv shows like ER, Grey's anatomy, scrubbs or House anymore.  And I love "House". it's such a brilliant show!
wouldnt' it be better if colorful Care Bears popped up instead?  maybe little blue Smurfs dancing across the screen or maybe these little yellow guys yeah ???
i dunno, just wonderin'...

Unfortunately I think they're required to have them there to keep the site free :( Like a sponser thing, and since this is a medical related forum, the ads all tend to be medical/pharmaceutical related.

I definitely know how you feel though. I LOVE the medical dramas- I own every season of House, ER, Scrubs, and Nip/Tuck on DVD (I'm a completist... haha) and just the other night I was watching an episode of ER in which one of the doctors was experiencing daily headaches and whatnot, and it turned out he had a brain tumor. So of course, since I get daily headaches and migraines and I've always feared this, I start freaking out thinking "What if I have a brain tumor?" I've been told before I should see a neurologist but to be honest, I'm afraid that I'll either go there and find out I have a tumor, and part of me would rather not know that right now.... Or, I would go and spend time and money on all these tests and have nothing wrong and everyone would think I'm just neurotic and I'd feel stupid.

I like the carebear idea.  I know that phobias may not respond to rational explanations and I don't know if this will help or not but Mesothelioma is most closely connected to people who work with asbestos (fire retardant material which is now mostly banned due to it's health risks) so if you are not an asbestos worker your risks are almost null.

I see no ads. Get Firefox! I didn't even know ads were on this forum. I'm kind of surpised that they they are, but I guess the site has to make money. Still, you don't have to look at them. Get the Firefox browser and these two extensions: adblock and noscript. You'll be happy you did because with the noscript, in particular, it keeps you from downloading a bunch of crap that you don't want on your computer while surfing. It's essential. There are some nefarious sites out there, but really, it's those ads that get you and often the sites have little control about what ads appear.

Hi, this is Kitt,

I understand exactly what you mean, but I know the ads help keep the site up and running otherwise the price could be very high.

Firefox was a good idea but I am not real computer savy and when it asks where I want to down load it, I X out.............hopefully you know how to load it.

I can pretty much block the ads from my vision or sometimes I see one that I think is helpful and click on it.

Care bears would be sweet..............I love color too.

Gentle Hugs.
